Vaccinations from next week

Please be gentle with me as I've never ventured opinions on Gransnet before! I'm really happy about the vaccine and will have it as soon as I can. Maybe this is the wrong thread, but here goes: My father, born in Australia in 1928, remembers this from junior school: "Cover every cough and sneeze, otherwise you'll spread disease". This attitude shaped my upbringing: we covered coughs, sneezes, yawns. We also washed our hands before eating. Now in my 50's and living in the UK I routinely see people my age and older not bothering with these hygiene practices. It drives me mad! Hopefully Covid 19 will remind us all to follow good hygiene, myself included!

This is a happy day!! I am classed as extremely vulnerable due to severe COPD and various other health problems. I will willingly have any vaccine that is offered to me. I do think however think that a great many people are afraid of the vaccine. Should we perhaps have a campaign of public information broadcasts to reassure people?

I'll wait and see what kind of basket cases come out of these experiments before I'll be letting them near me with some poorly tested vaccine. I wanted to be a unicorn when I was small but I don't want to be a Guinee pig now I'm older.

Growstuff Eligible population is all the groups the Government has said will get it, so includes healthy adults, but not children. So the intention is that everybody will be offered the vaccination before Easter. I think those people who have indicated that they will wait are probably not going to be able to get it later at their own convenience, because if it turns out to be like the flu jab it will only be stocked at a certain time of the year - who knows though yet.

Having taken time to study vaccines for my dogs and finding that the vaccine for leptospirosis may only be effective for a short period of time - way less than the suggested annual booster - my concerns about this very new vaccine is how long will it provide cover?
Someone on the news this morning was spouting forth about how this is the way forward and that the vaccine may last for years. MAY. Nobody knows.
So unless the vaccine is followed up with rigorous antibody testing we could be in for a huge pandemic 3/6/12/24 months down the line.
Just when we've had our vaccines, say the virus has mutated, in the same way the flu vaccine mutates, and we all go back to living our lives the way we used to, we could be hit by the worst yet.

I read that because this first vaccine is one that needs the -70 degree storage temperature, it might be given to hospital workers first, because the vaccine will need to be given in the hospital even though they were not originally in the first priority group. Might as well make a start somewhere! Then the other vaccines are somewhat easier to distribute to other places.

I didn't say I got fed up of the people growstuff, I said I was fed up with the story. I know its not the answer to everything, but always being told the same thing over and over again isn't helping at all.

It doesn't matter why people get the vaccine, if they think they are going to get immunity passports, well that probably won't happen. But always focussing on the negative slant about "its not what you think, you know", is not what we need right now.

Its not about seeing the reality of the situation. You and I usually agree about most things, so you know I'm not a super-optimist. But we need to have hope!

Absolutely , they have done their best to get this rolled out ASAP taking all the checks necessary, it would be selfish to not try and protect ourselves and others

I'm on the fence about this vaccine . Boris is so flip flop about things that this is great at the moment , then next month there will be some sort of problem . Are the first people who receives it a guinea pigs . By the time I get round to having it , we will see what the fall out of this vaccine has . Fingers crossed that all is good .

I'm hoping my local pharmacy will be vaccinating. I've had the flu jab there for years now. They let me know when the vaccine is in, I pop in when passing. No appt. Done. My DH who thinks you need a medical degree to give an injection has only just had his - first the vaccine didn't arrive at the surgery, then they ran out and didn't get more for weeks. GPs are very, very, very busy people these days! It makes sense to farm out something simple like this.

I'm sorry you get fed up with people who don't think it's a silver bullet, but it's not. I get fed up with people who think younger people should be vaccinated first and those who think some kind of "vaccine certificate" will guarantee that they're Covid-free.

I'm not in the magical thinking category but I get quite fed up with the its not a silver bullet story either.

What I think will happen is this:

As the most vulnerable start to get vaccinated, deaths and hospital admissions will decrease. Cases might not decrease, but it won't be nearly as serious a disease for the majority of people who get the vaccine. As deaths decrease, and the number of people vaccinated increase, some restrictions will be lifted. Eventually we'll get to a tipping point and life will feel "normal" again. The virus might mutate, or we might need boosters after a year or so, but eventually we will be able to treat this like flu.

I just got quite emotional in Tesco's where they are playing Christmas music, when the tune "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" came on with the lines some day soon we all will be together and next year all our troubles will be far away, because for the first time I think that might be true.

Same here. This is some hope in the midst of doom and gloom. When my group (over 70's) are called I shall be there ready and waiting.

Sparklefizz please don't feel you're causing unnecessary worry by reminding us that healthy people of 50 can die if they get this virus. So can younger people. Thats why our scientists have been working so hard to create a vaccine.

Sparklefizz that’s not the case, with the other vaccines on the way also, the Government’s intention is that the whole eligible population will be offered the vaccine by Easter. It’s a massive national operation to achieve that, so the mass vaccination centres are the only way forward.

What do you mean by the "eligible population"?

It doesn't affect your own risk, if other people haven't been vaccinated.
