I tell white lies if they cannot cause harm and when the truth would be hurtful. For example, when my friend asked me, after going to the hairdressers and changing her style, "Do you like this?" My honest opinion was no, but I told her it looked nice. After all it will grow back. Also when my mother, who has dementia, asks me if I know where her mom is (who has been deceased for many years) and I do not tell her that fact

I was a primary teacher and taught small groups of children. One day there was a vase of sand left in my room (from another teacher's lesson). I told my children it was a scorpion (non-poisonous). I embellished it so much it became a hypothetical, non-poisonous, nocturnal scorpion which had been given to me by scientists in America and which I fed on Monday mornings, before anyone arrived. One of our cleaners once told me that she had cleaned my room, but hadn't disturbed the scorpion. I really couldn't tell her that it wasn't real .

Several of the children swore that they had seen it move and one of them asked could he feed it each week. (I used to take out some sand and he would put it back in every Monday!)

This lasted for several years and sometimes former pupils would ask how the scorpion was when they saw me in the street!

Most of my whilte lies are trying to not to offend others by telling gifts that I don't need/like as "they were amazing"

The biggest white lie I have told my daughter is that santa had emailed me saying that her bedroom wasn't clean enough and for every day she did not listen to me she would lose a gift. She cleaned her bedroom quick sharp after that.

I had to tell a white lie when the GP told me the details of my Mum's illness, and she didn't really want to know the details herself!

When a friend asks my opinion about a haircut or a new outfit, I will tell a white lie, so as not to upset her.

My daughter back from US came to stay, I put her in a pretty spare bedroom, she asked if it was where Gt nan had died, I realised I had to lie here and said no she died in hospital, my daughter was happy with that and stayed in that bedroom never knowing the truth! I still feel bad about that little white lie x

Oh the usual ... when my children were young I lied about my age to join a social group which had strict age rules as I was almost past it already (Ladies Circle, female version of Round Table). Never realising that I would receive well wishes, flowers and small gifts when I was 42 and 52 instead of on the real Big O dates. Feeling the need to 'fess up soon before confused friends attend a funeral for a more youthful me ....

I try very hard not to, but it seems that I have unintentionally said that i'm an inch taller than my actual height! i have lost an inch in height somewhere , I think I have found extra inches on my waist though.........
