We used to play for hours with granny's button box. For whatever reason, it fascinated my brothers and me! We all wanted to empty the contents onto the floor so we had to take turns. Simple pleasures!

When I was growing up we used to have lots of visits to our cousins, who lived across the fields, my aunt used to make wonderful teas, then we would all play card games. like 'Sevens' or 'Newmarket', 'Rummy' and 'Pontoon' And wonderful board games like Cleudo and Monopoly. usually accompanied by lots of shouting and arguing but so much fun. We learnt to be gracious winners and good losers!!!

I used to love playing draughts with my dad and these days i play with my little grandson .

I was the happiest in my father`s workshop. He was a master carpenter and let me play with his tools. Cracked a lot of hazelnuts with his hammers while sitting on the floor.

Wo thing I enjoyed stick out. The first was getting on my bike and with friends going out for the whole day. We visited an unused airfield, had races across the weed strewn runways, swung from breaches of trees across brooks, health and safety non existent then. I was a bit of a Tom boy had to be outside. However if rain forced me in or circumstances, out would come my John Bull printing set, a Post Office office would then open or the editorial department of my favourite comic School Friend, my sisters and I would play for hours until we got bored and the jigsaws came out. I never remember playing with a doll or cuddly toy as my sisters did.

My favourite part of my childhood was when it was time to go picking the fruits strawberries, gooseberries, blackberry, plum and even apple and pear picking we used to see who could earn the most money out of the three of us, sometimes we used to be so tired we would say don’t think I’ll go tomorrow then when it was time to go to bed we would all change our minds and be up bright and early to do it all over again, it was fun, we were getting loads of fresh air and we had the sense of achievement for what we had done at the end of the day, plus we would eat the odd strawberry as long as we didn’t get caught. I even did potato picking a few times with my mum but that was really hard work. We all had great satisfaction when we wanted to buy something and we could pay for it ourselves.

It was playing in the sandpit at home with my bucket and spade making sandcastles. They were not the best however due to my age but I thought they looked really good and was really upset each time they had to be demolished

I lived next to the beach at Cleethorpes my best time was summer holidays spent down the prom I used to watch the steam trains come into the station all the noise from them, along with the excited chatter coming with the kids who had come with there mums and dads, there would soon be a gang of us playing assorts of games on the beach, rock pooling, sand castles, kick ball fly, swimming or paddling, eating our sarnies always got a bit of sand in them lol. Drinking council pop. Those six weeks holidays used to fly by,

Hopscotch on the pavement, having to search for the perfect stone to throw and a piece of old London brick to use as chalk.

I had 2 sisters and during the holidays we absolutely loved playing cowboys and Indians, I had a blow up kayak, one sister had a teepee and the other had a hobby horse. We played for hours and hours.

A game called one for the pot - water everywhere, used to get very messy!

I loved playing in the woods behind my house. We climbed trees, built dens, paddled in streams and played hide and seek. We were out all day, coming home when it started to get dark. No one worried about us and we often had smaller children to look after too!

Reading, definitely lots of reading!

Dressing up..... my sisters and I had a dressing up box, we spent hours and found out later out elderly neighbours used to watch us out of their window and said it gave them such pleasure to see us. Unfortunately, our lovely mum gave us her wedding dress so we played weddings, often in the rain..... you can imagine what happened to the dress!!!

Playing football with my brother, sister and cousins... I was always put in goal because they told me I was really good at it, but it was years later before I realised it was because I was actually so rubbish at running and kicking the ball!

Skipping....I still have my old skipping rope 70 years later.

We used to play British Bulldogs in the playground at junior school - I am sure they would not be allowed to these days because of health and safety concerns!!! Different times.
