This is the sort of thing that gets on my nerves most. I had my first computer back in the 1980's . Then you had to be able to use code to run the thing. Before that I was taught about them in schools. Plug in and play arrived in the 1990's. I was first in the line. I have been using social media before they got that name. ( It was compuseve groups and microsoft groups and usenet back then).

I was involved in setting up one of the first wiki pages. I was involved in online education very early on too. I shake my head at being told how to use e mail by some whipper snapper who actually knows less than I do - had that at work.

Bill Gates is older than I am. He invented these media. Lets not forget that.

Have to say though some places do consider over 50 to be old grumble grumble

Um... people still seem to be taking this seriously! As I said upthread I found the original artiche and it was written tongue in cheek,(ages ago) he was actually saying the opposite ......makes me think my posts are not appearing......

One person's opinion. I remember some woman at a meeting I was as at in my late 20s, saying once a woman got to 30 she was too old to have long hair and it should be cut. Rubbish! who cares what individuals deem as arbitary cut off points as to what you can and can't do. Why would anyone want to live by a set of parameters that exist in someone else's head.

Erm!... I HAD already noticed though that, while I happily use emoticons in my whatsapp texts, none of my British friends/relations who are in my age group do. (Am in my early seventies.)

Apart from criminal and other damaging activity, it is no one's right to tell other people – whatever their age – how to behave, dress, think, talk or vote, among many other things. This is not the Middle Ages and men may not dictate to women how they should behave – the law that ruled that has long ceased to exist. Who on earth is Ben Machell and why is anyone paying attention to someone who seems to be a complete numpty and something of a nonentity.

I think it's important to dress reasonably according to our age I don't mean drab loose fitting clothes but need to steer clear of short shorts and short dresses and especially heavy makeup. We really do look like mutton dressed up as lamb when we do these things.
Dress smart wear makeup applied as gransnet suggests and feel great about yourself then you will come out smiling everyday.

Just tracked down ben machell and his original article....he was writing tongue in cheek and was actually saying how cool most over 50’s are! So no need for all the outrage although it was fun. I just had my 70th and someone of that age said to me (excuse the language “Well you look fucking marvellous” loved it.

Ooooh another Dotty!!! Lady after my own heart. Don’t you just love to shock the youngsters? I wore a mini dress, opaque tights and suede Chelsea boots for work the other day. Why not? Still have good legs. I thought I looked fab. In fact I know I did. Might have been the only one who thought/knew, but still".........

How about a list of things no-one over 30 should be doing/seen wearing?

Waistcoats! No one under 50 should be seen in one, Certainly not on Young fogies of 37.

So..... since when did a 37 year old get to decide what is appropriate for over 50s??????

To be fair, the only thing on the banned list that would impact on my life is use of emojis.

But I often go without knickers in the summer........

At 75 I still carry on as I've always done living my life as I want, who cares anyway for other opinions, it's our life and it can be short. Live it to the best you can and want.

He’s quite right about some things - for example, it must be infuriating for his generation to hear (some of) our generation banging on about how little their first house cost.

And while I’d defend Helena Christensen’s and any other woman’s right to go out in a bustier if she wanted to, it doesn’t mean she looks stylish or elegant in it.

Most children grow out of thinking they are the centre of the universe. Sadly some don't. I blame the newspaper for paying for such illiberal rubbish. Take away all his toys until he realises we are all equal and can make our own decisions, good or bad.
