Baby’s 1st Christmas!

DD has just bought a wooden train from Hobbycraft - advent calendar, painted it with his name on it and will fill it with small items each year. He is 4 now and will love it. She has another to paint for his sister who is 10 months for next year. Each year the whole family have been gifted dough craft hand prints made into decorations for the tree. DGS hands getting a bit big now so don't know what this year will be but not yet got any from DGD. DD is primary school teacher (early years) so quite into crafts! Has a Hobbycraft account!! However many things can be made into special commemorative items.

A Sharpie Felt Pen is great for writing names onto ceramic gifts. 3 of our dgc have unusual names that are not usually found on crafty gifts and I found the Sharpie to work very well.

I used to knit a lot of Aran sweaters but arthritis put paid to that. Two weeks ago I started to crochet cotton yarn dishcloths. Hmmm... the stitches seem to disappear and so the shape isn't good. Today I bought large knitting needles and will knit the dishcloths and then crochet a different coloured trim around them. Just knitting garter stitch is much easier on the hands/joints than working with cable needles etc. or with a heavy piece of knitted garment. The cotton dishcloths are brilliant, a world of difference from a bought dishcloth and they go into the washing machine. I give them out as a wee token gesture when I go visit someone.

Many thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to a craft fair and will certainly look out for tree decorations which could have my GGD's name and birthdate on them.
BabyLayla - so glad you made the Christmas sacks, you must feel so pleased. I sometimes have to just force myself to get up, get out and do something. Afterwards I'm always so glad I made the effort and wonder why I don't do it every day!

I have been sewing too, after not doing any for years and have found it very enjoyable. Not Christmas sacks because DD has made them all one each (she is much better than me!) but I hope my Christmas crafts will be keepsakes.

Slightly off point, but sewing is great therapy. I hope you can do some more. Look at Pinterest for ideas.

I've just made Christmas sacks for my youngest grandson and great granddaughter. Hopefully they will be saved for many years.
I've been fancying making them for years but everything else got in the way, however this year I've been unwell and slipped into depression.
I forced myself into the shop, bought the hessian etc, the following week I set up the machine ( had for 5 years and used 3 times)
To stop the procrastinating, I arranged an evening to visit and spent the entire day faffing with the material, I got it made in time, it doesn't look great at all, several lumpy bits and slightly uneven stitching but feeling better for trying and it was very well received.

Our 8th grandchild [4th boy] was born on Saturday so thanks for these helpful ideas.

Love the idea of a silver charm bracelet, though don't think we'll still be alive when the little ones are 18!

We bought our granddaughter an adult sized silver charm bracelet and every year we buy a charm that highlights something special for that year .

I have a little note and I write a paragraph every year about why we chose that particular charm and its significance. The idea is to give it to her on her 18th birthday.

If you can afford it a Pandora bead or similar. I bought one for my goddaughter (who also has an unusual name that matches her bead)

I have tree decorations that I bought when each of my children were born and also bought them for D to put on her tree for GC. They have year and childs name on. I bought them at craft fares.
I like the idea of an embroidered ccusion.
