School Proms.

When I say £500 was spent on a dress, I think it was the parents who paid, not the girl.

I do think an awful lot of money is spent but it’s so lovely to hear that your GD was sensible enough to only spend £10 on a dress.

Our SIL recently took a young man from their village to his prom in his “super car” his family don’t have a lot of money so it was an extra special treat!

He was so thrilled.

I think the whole thing is a bit hard on boys because the getting dressed and ready is prob more than half the fun.

When my eldest DD left school it was a thing to post photographs of yourself on first and last day at school. At 5 her uniform sweatshirt reached much closer to her knees than her skirt did at age 18😂

One of our GS’s had his prom last night, he took his time getting ready (a couple of hours)

So smart in suit, shirt & tie, brought tears to my eyes.

Our eldest GD had her prom this week, it’s a rite of passage these days. She looked gorgeous ( excuse the Granny boast ).
She and her friends went in a vintage Routemaster bus. It was interesting to see how the suited and booted young men still managed to make themselves individuals. Quite sweet of those who had girlfriends wore ties to match the dresses. Ahh ❤️
The money spent on her dress and hair etc. was a small reward for all her diligent hard work over the months revising for her exams.

How do single sex schools arrange proms? Do public schools have them?

One of my DCs went last year and they were not allowed to bring partners from a different school.

Proms are a horrible American import like baby showers. So glad I have two boys and didn't have to bother with the nonsense of dresses and fake tans.

I agree Bukkie they are horrid, the kids, or parents, all try to outdo each other, so they arrive in RollsRoyces, huge Cadillacs, tractors, army vehicles, helicopters the lot. It’s less to do with enjoying themselves than this awful ‘we ve got something bigger and better than you’ attitude
Mine couldn’t wear their mums dresses as there were NO proms when my children went to school thank goodness

How do single sex schools arrange proms? Do public schools have them?

My dc went to single sex grammar schools which were fairly close in location and did a lot of stuff together , such as army cadets and D of E . The girls would invite the boys to their prom and visa versa . Many pupils had brothers and sisters in each school .

I agree. They are all just trying to outdo each other with the best dress, best mode of transport etc. It can’t be very nice for the young girls who are still in the puppy fat stage and who can’t find a dress to flatter them.
