Is Gransnet leaning more to the left?

(136 Posts)
Sago Tue 20-Oct-26 19:19:59

After looking through the thread on the Guardian top 10 books it prompted me to revisit a thread I started in August re the Daily Telegraph top 50 books.

The responses were pretty negative on the whole, it would seem posters felt the list was “subjective, tosh, prescriptive, snobbery, silly, objective, woke”

The Guardian list was far better received.

This got me thinking is Gransnet leaning too far left?

I asked Chat GPT’s opinion.

Here’s some of the feedback.

Some 10 active posters create 43% of posts.

During the 2024 election academic research found strong views on both sides.

The researchers described the discussions as politically diverse and sometimes polarised.

The most interesting though was a Trustpilot review.
This echoed my my feelings exactly.

“Gransnet is the sister site for the very well known Mumsnet site but aimed at Grandparents and mainly over 50s.

It has so much potential to be a great site and there are some really nice, helpful people on there with a wide range of discussions which are usually pretty lively, supportive and informative.

Unfortunately in more recent times it has become very cliquey with a number of Far Left supporters who tend to dominate any discussion on politics and news and seem to spend all their time on there arguing fiercely with people who do not share their views and they can get very aggressive and rude. The Gransnet moderators used to do a great job but if you report them now, the nasty comments remain which is very unfair. moderators should be unbiased but it looks as though they favour people on the Left. These contributors also like to belittle others or make sarcastic remarks about grammar, spelling etc which, again, are usually allowed.

It is also very sad that several people have either been banned from the site with no good reason given and others have just left because it is so cliquey.”

At least one of my adversaries had the good manners to contact me by PM to tell me not to reply to her posts 😂

I'm sorry if I'm repeating something already said, but I haven't time to read the whole thread.

Looking at the OP we have some sort of factual infirmstion although we cannot know what as we don't seem to have been give the question AI processed; and an opinion - one unknown person's opinion.

I'm not really sure that either prove anything.

I agree.

We should have been told what the question posed to Chatgtp was and whether the OP was meaning Gransnet as a whole or just one particular forum (N&P)

As it is, the whole premise is a bit obscure and this statistic of 10% of posters contributing 43% of posts is quite meaningless...

I accept my own comment ( thinking about it now ) wasn’t the best, and I will in future ignore all her posts ( how I wish there was a ‘block poster’ function ) - but bringing up my spelling error on here and smiling about it was extremely unkind, and only done to humiliate me.
I’m just glad I’m not that unkind.

👏👏👏👏👏

Cossy I don’t think that there is currently a clique on the N & P threads however, they have been around previously.

I am rather an odd fish politically, I guess my natural home is right of centre, but I disagree strongly with the current trend of fiscal rules touted by all parties. I strongly believe in the state providing a safety net for those in need, but not as a lifestyle choice.

(Just a few of my bete noirs)

Yes I agree, regarding the state providing a safety net for those in need but not as a lifestyle choice.

Although the state outlay would be minimal in the great scheme of things, it has only just been announced that serious offenders incarcerated in high security mental hospitals such as Calocane will no longer receive state benefits. It's very hard to get one's mind around such people even being considered to receive any payments given the horrific acts committed and presumably their needs are being met at great expense anyway.

Just one example of an appalling unjustified waste of money that has presumably gone on under both administrations and probably the public aren't aware of.

Ignore it and carry on.

I’m stuck in the house atm and have been for several months, so probably spending far too long online than I should.

I think I’ll follow your lead Oreo and have a G&T (or another tipple) and a lie down. 🍸🍹🥂🍷🧉 Very disappointed I cannot locate a G&T emoji!

Doodledog Wed 21-Oct-26 09:23:12

Your POV is similar to mine, GrannyGravy, but I see myself as left of centre*. I don't like freeloaders in pretty much any contexts, but absolutely believe that there should be a robust safety net for those who are unable to support themselves.

* I think there is too much weight given to 'right' and 'left' labels, though. There are many important things that have nothing to do with 'wings', yet often people accuse those who disagree with them of left or right wing bias.

I would agree with your post, Sago.
Particularly the 10% of posters responsible for 43% of the posts.
I wouldn't describe them particularly as far left, simply Labour supporters convinced of the rightness of their cause.
Far too much placing people in categories and use of far and hard and even extreme to describe the views of those they disagree with.
Plus a whiff of sanctimony.

I agree with what you say Eazybee
Especially with the 10% of posters being responsible for 43% of posts.I often wonder if some are on this site all day long.
As for the whiff of sanctimony…..it sometimes overcomes me and I have to have a G&T and a lie down😂
There are apparently hundreds and hundreds of GNers so we can’t know the flavour of their politics it’s just that the more prolific posters on N&P seem to be left wing, either Labour or Green supporters.
I’m a middle of the road type of Labour supporter and have noticed some posters are more left leaning but not Far Left.
There are also Conservative and Reform supporters but not Far Right.
I haven’t noticed any Lib Dem supporters 😁

It’s pretty hard sometimes I admit, in some areas I most definitely am a centralist, but in others I’m definitely left leaning, more than left of centre.

I think many of us are “mixed” in our political beliefs and views.

I see nothing wrong with this.

Those of us who studied nineteenth century history might have been forced to . Along with other stuff . I remember getting ticked off by my mil for having a copy of Mao’s little red book, too.

Ditto here nanna8
I did study Mao’s little red book as well, as part of my degree.

Cossy, I think your posts come across as sympathetic and even handed, I don't think all those of a left wing persuasion are aggressive by any means, but I have seen some stridently acid put downs from time to time.

Poppyred Wed 21-Oct-26 09:07:58

Totally agree Sago. That’s why I hardly ever join in any conversations anymore.

MG55 Wed 21-Oct-26 09:06:15

Thank you to Graphite who replied to my post late last night.
😀
I seem to have read many of the books on all the lists so in conclusion to the debate, it just shows that I just read a lot 🧐

For what it’s worth I think that those who are left leaning are more vocal on N &
P threads.

As a vocal N&P l, who is actually (imho) left of centre, I agree left leaning people appear to start more threads on N&P (guilty as charged) and are more vocal.

However, I don’t buy into this “clique”, “pile on”, or that there’s deliberate insults and picking up on posters grammar and spelling.

N&P does bring out some very strong feelings.

Bring it on I say.😄 But I do think it is because the right - at this time in their history - have such a poor story to tell that it is very difficult for them. When was the last time the Tories said something that grabbed the headlines? And as for Reform - well too awful to even begin to defend.

As I said above. The pendulum will swing again. Just be patient.

Meanwhile us lefties can make hay and enjoy ourselves😊

I think you are probably correct Whitewavemark2 👍

How many of you have read Jane Eyre?

Did you know that this classic is being banned in some USA states?

If you really want an indication of what would constitute a 'far right' reading list, why not check out what else has been banned?

I love Jane Eyre! I like all the Brontë books and the Brontes. I’ve read many autobiographies about the family their lives, which are interesting, sad and shocking.

Child deaths and an addict brother.

As for banning in Texas, it’s a book of its time and the reasons given for the ban will apply to so many novels!

NotSpaghetti Wed 21-Oct-26 08:50:33

Just looked up the Jane Eyre banning.
It's apparently for:

Bigamy and Infidelity - Rochester’s attempt to marry Jane while keeping his living wife, locked in the attic.

Violence and Mental Illness - scenes involving Bertha burning down the Hall, biting her brother

Child Abuse and Cruelty - harsh treatment Jane suffers at Gateshead Hall and the Lowood School.

Passionate and Romantic - Themes of intense emotional and romantic passion outside traditional societal norms.

These are the reasons in parts of Texas. Apparently.

And, diverting slightly, some GNs are actually buddies, from the frequently advertised regional meet ups.
