I haven't seen a "proper" butchers shop for 20 years. I live in London!

In our small town we are lucky enough to have two butchers. I support both and the meat is far superior to any from the supermarkets. I urge people to support small independent shops. Use them or lose them.

Sweet potatoes, butternut squash, a carrot or two and a big onion plus a little grated nutmeg make a very warming and filling soup.

I like frozen sweet potato chips but, apart from that, no.

We don't really like pulses either.

There are a fair few butchers shops round here and few in farm shops but they are really expensive. I use a butcher in the next village who is very good and fairly reasonably priced. And most of his meat is locally sourced.

loose onions & carrots are really cheap. & you can buy big bags of english apples at the moment very cheaply.

We have got a bit fussy about things like apples over the years I think. My mum didn't have much luxury food when she was young & had most of her fruit from her own fruit-trees (damsons, vics & egg plums, eating & cooking apples & pears - not cherries as the birds always ate them)
Now she'll only eat Braeburn apples from the supermarket.

Chicken, sweet potato and spinach curry is lovely.

Red split lentils - especially the 4kg bags - and wholewheat pasta. You can make miles of meals from just those two ingredients.

I didn’t like sweet potatoes a few years ago but now I love them.

Chick peas don’t like me 😂

Roasted root vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, onion, parsnip) makes a good cheap meal but of course the electricity for the oven may be expensive - an air fryer should be cheaper.

The 1.75 kg bags of yellow lentils (mung dal) are v cheap in the Asda foreign foods aisle.
Now and then I make dal with spinach (usually frozen) and cauliflower, onion, sundry spices and veg stock cubes. Very tasty it is too.

I’ve only just discovered sweet potatoes which are incredibly good for you ( I only started buying them for the dog but now love them baked and chipped). And I’m learning how to do things with chick peas.

I wish I liked sweet potatoes. 🙁

It took me a long while to get used to them. I like them best as chips or wedges. Have you tried mashing them with "normal" potatoes?

Pasta is also still pretty cheap as are black and kidney beans.

I’m not vegan or veggie but will happily eat these dishes.

If and when we do buy meat, mainly chicken, I buy thighs and only get sausages and bacon from the butchers.

I don’t eat potatoes or very much pasta. ☹️

I recently discovered chick peas. There’s some great recipes online for chickpea and sweet potato curry. I’ve made a good few variations of it and you can cook and freeze
