Summer jobs

Many years ago I had a very switched on friend who ran a busy and popular cafe in Poulton le Fylde. She got a very good scheme going, in that there were mostly women working there, who had families. As their children got older, some had saturday jobs there too. Then when they went to uni or college or whatever, they would swap with their mums, who needed to be off for younger childrens holidays. She did not mind whether it was the mothers or the children, and it worked very well all round. Everyone was happy, in that the students knew that they had a holiday job through out their time away, and of course they would not be messing about or bunking off as this was their mums place of work. I know that she kept staff for years , and it was appreciated by everyone. Dont think that things like that are available any longer.

Both of my 17/18 year old DGD's are working in nursery's with young children during the holidays. Both want to work with children, one teaching, one a paediatric nurse. They are both DBS checked.

I think it's great for young people to have summer jobs - but there certainly doesn't seem to be as many opportunities for them as there used to be. Both my DD and DS had summer jobs and it did them the world of good. I had one too - between leaving school and going to uni, I worked for British Rail taking phone enquiries about timetables and fares. That was in the days when you had to look everything up in massive books, not unlike the old telephone directories. It could be 'interesting' at times, I can assure you!

So much reading was required for my degree that an additional job would have been impossible unless I stayed up all night every night.

My son’s Cambridge college didn’t allow jobs in term time. He worked in the book department of John Lewis in the vacations.

My 16yr old DGD is looking for a job for the rest of the holidays.
DS is so protective of her. He doesn't seem to want her to find one.

Our grandaughter is working in a supermarket.

One of my daughters works at a farm park. When the universities and schools are on holiday she gets far fewer hours, because students are much cheaper to employ.
Zero hours contracts really hurt workers with no or few qualifications.

I worked in a local store Friday nights (late town opening for shopping ) and all day on a Saturday from age 15. Started a nursery nursing course ( which I got a small salary for ) at 16 and 2 months , me and my friend were the youngest there.

I paid my mother board and then had to budget for my own clothes, makeup, fares and lunches to college . My mum gave me a lift to my placement and I had free lunch there .

It’s good for teens to do some work as well as study it teaches them different things. I learnt to manage my own money at a young age and have always been a good at budgeting. I feel we had to grow up more quickly in the 60’s and become more independent than today’s young people . I got married at 19 but that’s another story ( and a big mistake)

My gd is home from university and has a summer job at a seaside cafe. It’s a lovely way to spend the summer.
I worked in a seaside restaurant when I was a teenager and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Summer jobs were great. I had several over the years. You learn a lot from them.
