Spike Milligan. 1959, (I was 4) his book of Silly verse for kids, follows by all his other books and of course The Goons and Telegoons. My whole family share his clever sense of humour.

I think we had that book, too.
Maverick Prowells had rumbling bowels that thundered in the night.
They shook the bedrooms all around, and gave the folks a fright.

living in Edinburgh for two years, the fringe is fab, seeing comedians before they were famous

I love sharing humor, in conversation and chat with friends etc. I used to love comedy on TV and Radio, most of it now is so juvenile as in Radio4,s 6.30 slot or it is full of swearing and sexual references and just makes me shudder. So I've always loved it, but now I've fallen out with it in 'entertainment'.

Fawlty Towers, Black Books, Father Ted, Not the nine O’clock news, The Life of Brian.

My family. Irish. Gatherings were spent rolling around with laughter.

Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and the Young Ones. QI and Have I Got News For You take that place now.

What an odd question, comedy is so subjective. As a child basil brush and crackerjack made me laugh . As a teen it was Monty Python. As an adult it was father Ted, fawlty towers , porridge , only fools and horses. I prefer situation comedy rather than stand up.
The comedian who really made me laugh was Edna Everidge . I saw her live .
I’ve seen a few comedians live in big venues like the O2 and was disappointed. IMO comedians are better in small venues .

Would that be Mike Harding, 62Granny?

Yes it was I googled him after I wrote that. 😂

Some of my earliest memories include listening to the comedy half hour on the Home Service - my mother usually had it on in the evening. The Clitheroe Kid, the Navy Lark, the Men from the Ministry....

Michael MacIntyre and John Bishop seen live. Abs and ribs sore for hours afterwards.

I agree with Michael McIntyre, I've seen him live too. Very very funny.

I discovered my humour with Love Thy Neighbour and On The Buses. Then a few years later The Young Ones made me laugh so much I went into labour (I was due so it could have been coincidence but it’s my story and I am sticking to it).

cpndrake Tue 04-Aug-26 14:27:24

Norman Wisdom . Charlie Drake both made me laugh i miss the old style comedy nothing offensive about it abit of innuendo sometimes but that was about it

Neilspurgeon0 Tue 04-Aug-26 14:22:20

Funnily enough although I loved The Hoons and Round the Horne and lots of other mentions by GNer above, the only time I have ever laughed like a drain was on a bus. I had just boutght a new tape fur my Walkman and Jake Thackeray was singing about a girl who ‘makes love upon national monuments’ utterly mesmerising seeing the pictures in my head !! His ‘Sir Robert Walpole’ about a statue that comes to life is also hilarious.

Talking about films, I have just been watching a production of ‘ Young Sherlock Homes’ being filmed which they said would be possible to see from the end of the year.

Had to Google his name because I haven’t seen him for a while, but I love Rich Hall and he is the only comedian ( not that I’ve seen many) whose show didn’t let me down. He’s made some great documentaries for the BBC too. Dylan Moran was a disappointment. I’d love to see Bill Bailey on stage. And what can anyone say about Bob Mortimer. Total legend and national treasure.

Welshy Tue 04-Aug-26 14:09:01

Off the top of my head, I meant to say. Pity you can't edit after sending.

Welshy Tue 04-Aug-26 14:03:38

Out of the top of my head, Two that made me laugh out loud. Both Dawn French/Vicar Of Dibley. The puddle moment, Dawn French’s character, Geraldine Granger, playfully leaps into a muddy puddle, only to disappear completely beneath the water.
The other Geraldine Granger, finds herself in a dilemma. To avoid hurting anyone's feelings, she agrees to attend three massive Christmas dinners in one day.

Lots of favourites...Billy Connolly, Kevin Bridges, Allan Carr, Jimmy Carr, James Acaster ( local boy) Bob Mortimer....

MayBee70 Tue 04-Aug-26 14:03:09

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Billy Connolly. It was at a friends flat and he played an LP of his and I’d never heard anything like it. Having said that I prefer more of a deadpan humour; feel irritated by comedians who seem to be laughing at themselves and Billy, great as he is imo falls into that category. I do think that he was ground breaking, though.

Billy Connolly ,Met him at a house party before he was famous….might have been one of the houseparties he used onstage…just say Jimmy said to come…everybody knows a Jimmy.
Saw him onstage several times and always came awaysorerom laughing
The man is a comic genius.

Totally agree, so funny. How wonderful to have met him. Very funny, clever man. Love his stand up and his documentary programmes as well as his acting.

Ken Dodd, - Have you ever tried shoving a cucumber through your neighbours door and shouted ' Missus, the aliens have landed' ?

I loved Kenneth Williams too, MissAdventure, he was so funny and talented. But sad in some ways.

😻 love it!
