Why do people lie online are they living a fantasy or winding us up?

Just that really,

I don’t understand why people come online with a story with more holes than a sieve.

Do posters not realise they have left a trail?

I was embarrassed by a singing colleague promoting our tour publicising it by dreaming up part of my and his bio. Fantastical events. Photos of him with star tenors turned into close associations when it was just taken after a concert, as many others did.

Whilst it’s natural to make the best of one’s career, the outright lies were mind boggling and backfired on him.

Just to say that a person may have a husband, divorce him, then marry a wife.
One of my friends from Toddlers' Club did that.

That's really not the point of the knickers thread, though grin

Please ladies - we must be accurate - the knickers were white not blue.

MissAdventure Tue 30-Jun-26 11:29:08

That's a good point.
I hadn't thought of it.

When my D was young she had two friends who lived fantasy lives.
They told her the most fantastic stories about their “doings”.
I helped her negotiate in her dealing with them and we worked out what could be true and what was obviously not.
We had tales of pregnancy, abortions, lost jobs etc.
She dropped one completely and stayed on chatting terms with the other as I knew her parents.
My D learnt to believe only what you can prove for yourself and that others lives are not all drama and excitement or told to either shock or to boost ego.

Scott.
That's the fellow.

It reminds me of Carry On Camping, when Charles Hawtry ends up sharing a tent with June Whitfield and Terry... someone or other.

Or the workman could be joining in the threesome( or foursome) all wearing blue knickers 🤣🤣🤣

Sorry but this brings back memories of Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army going from door to door about the parachute knickers.

I can endorse Maws post - not just TMs with sexual fantasies, but also extremely sad and distressed callers who rang Branches throughout the country with the same tale - basically a pack of lies!

Mental health issues, or just after 5 minutes of fame?

When I joined Gransnet I think I read some advice about how to protect your identity and that of grandchildren. It suggested changing some details of ages, gender of grandchildren if asking for advice. I wonder if some people try to do that and then get mixed up?

I think confusing a husband for a wife is a big mix up.

kircubbin2000 Tue 30-Jun-26 09:17:17

I don't know what this is about but 2 Times articles last week must have neglected to do any background checks on the stories. They concerned Liz Fraser and Jess Taylor who have 'had lives ruined by trolls'.
Journalists need to dig deeper.

It's the most interesting thread on here, of late. wink

Ziplok Tue 30-Jun-26 08:42:53

It was certainly a strange post. I was like you about believing it fancythat when I read it.
Oh well, nowt so queer as folks, as they say 😊

fancythat Tue 30-Jun-26 08:38:06

I assumed the thread had been withdrawn.

Now we are all doing the talking about a thread thing.

fancythat Tue 30-Jun-26 08:36:27

For what it is worth
I think there are people who like story telling in general
There are obvious liars in life
There are people who have bad mental health
There are people who like to stir a pot
There are people who like to get kicks out of life

jusnoneed Tue 30-Jun-26 08:35:53

MaizieD the thread is on AIBU and titled Some Advice Please.

Someone with a vivid imagination.

*It was by someone who had claimed to have both a husband and wife at different times*

What an interesting life they must lead.

In March 2022 they speak of a wife who is a funereal celebrant.

In September 2023, they have a row with their husband over a TV advert.

I must have missed the bit about them being worn!!! shock
They were put back in the drawer, having been worn?!!

Yes, she/he was sure they put them in the laundry basket!

Ferry it is conpletely possible you are right and I am too cynical.

I think that I actually spend too much time on here and read so many weird and wonderful stories I just land up believing them all!

Time for a new hobby.

No, they were in the laundry basket - if I remember correctly
