Crying over sad songs on the radio

Just listening to Michael Ball on Radio2, and he played Lean on Me by Bill Withers. Couldn't stop the tears coming, as it's so poignant. I seem to feel a lot like this recently whenever I hear certain songs; Carole King's You've got a Friend is another one. Never used to feel like this, so must be an age thing! Also, the fact that he's pjaying lots of Father's Day dedications isn't helping! Anyone else have songs which set them off?

'There's a Place For Us' - from Westside Story.

It made an impression on me when I was 12 and dreaming of the future. I feel sad when I hear it now as I think how naive I was then.

Pearl Fishers duet and Nessun Dorma was also noticed at that age. But I find them uplifting.

Walk on with hope in your heart always reduces me to tears whoever sings it

You’ll never walk alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers. Cannot get through that song without becoming a puddle.
Also must add ‘He ain’t heavy he’s my brother’ by the Hollies.

I had Everybody Hurts played at my daughter's funeral.
She said "I don't want you all there celebrating my life; i want you to cry at how sad it is that I'm dead!"

La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf
La Boheme by Charles Aznevour
Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy

Not commonly played but will always make me cry.

More popular songs would be

Everybody hurts by REM
I will always love you by Whitney Houston
Thank you for the Days by Kirsty McColl
Let it be me The Everly Brothers
Bridge over Troubled Waters Simon and Garfunkel

I just love John Denvers voice.
Annie's song is so beautiful.

I’ve just heard John Denver’s Leaving on a Jet Plane on my car radio - such a clear voice and perfect diction, so I’ll add that to my list.

Oh for me (just asked Alexa) is the harmonica version of Midnight Cowboy by John Barry. It’s reminds me of a time and place with Himself 😢

Goodness the tears are tricking now x

I can cty at any song these days.
It's as if they've been written just for my girl, even if its just a particular phrase.
For those that don't resonate, i cry for other people's loss, or because they're struggling with a shopping bag; any reason sets me off.

I've always been like this but now older feel less embarassed if 'caught out' in public! It seems to be less embarassing to others to witness if you are older somehow.
I remember sobbing my heart in reception class at The Grandfather Clock song!

I’m a terrible ‘weller’ my eyes fill with tears and I well up at so many songs, and like you keepcalm I also cried at Grandfather’s Clock.
I still cry if I hear Puff The Magic Dragon!😊

I love ‘Songbird’, sung my Christine McVie. It’s top of my ‘when I go’ list! But the one that has me in tears is ‘I Have Dreamed’ from the King and I. DH used to sing it. He had a good voice and was always singing (Welsh, you see🙄). When he couldn’t remember all the words, he made them up as he went along. He knew all the words to that one though.

What a Wonderful World - my aunt’s favourite and her funeral entrance song. She had a rather sad life in many ways but always looked on the positives and loved the beauty of the world. She was a wonderful big sister to my mum and stayed with her right to the end. After Mum died, when I was quite young, I knew my aunt was always there for me. I miss her chats and encouragement so much and if I hear the song my tears just flow.

I can smile when look at photos of my DLH, but listening to his favourite music makes the teats come. Neil Sedaka was played a lot. Songbird was played at his funeral - my daughters’ choice. They remembered dancing around the room as it was playing, when they were young. Eva Cassidy’s I Know You By Heart was also played.

I was in bits when Michael Ball played "Somewhere over the Rainbow" this morning for Father's no longer here. My Dad has been gone 12 years, I still miss him every day.
Dancing with my Father is another one that has me in tears.
Sad but lovely, that all that love is still inside you.

I shed tears yesterday at Somewhere over the Rainbow on Sunday love songs. My mums favourite and played at her funeral. So poignant for me on Fathers Day with my dad bravely carrying on after 5 years.

Slipping through my fingers gets me too even though I don’t have a daughter. It still has the same effect on me over boys in the family as they grow.

Luther Vandross, Dance with my father. Also Wind beneath my Wings, Bette Midler and Simon and Garfunkel Bridge over Troubled Waters, both played at my DH funeral !! Tbh so many songs and even some adverts set me off these days, really doesn’t take much 😢

Those were the Days (Mary Hopkin) and Honey (Bobby Goldsboro); also Seasons in the Sun (Terry Jacks) and Vincent (Don McLean) come to mind. All tear jerkers for me.

Sorry- I see you just beat me to it with two of those, and in fact I agree about the other two songs too.

dayvidg Mon 22-Jun-26 16:14:14

Richie Haven's coverof Sting's They Dance Alone

Oldnproud Mon 22-Jun-26 16:13:49

For me, it's "Those were the days"" and "Seasons in the Sun" that bring on the tears nowadays.
Oh, and "Puff the Magic Dragon blush

I'm not a crier and it's not a favourite song, but John Denver singing Annie's song - every time.

Me too. My best friend was called Annie and she died of cancer 42 years ago at the age of 38. It always brings tears to my eyes and I am not a crier either.

eddiecat78 Sun 21-Jun-26 13:14:57

I defy anyone who has a daughter not to be affected by Slipping Through My Fingers

Shel1951 Sun 21-Jun-26 12:57:09

For me its the attachment to memories that does it, people now deceased and the times we had , time gone so quickly,
Places of old...

Michael Ball played Dance with my Father today Bukkie and GeorgesGran beautiful song and so apt for today.

There are songs that bring tears to my eyes and I'm not ashamed or embarrassed to admit it, even though I'm a man and we're not supposed to cry at things are we? That's an outdated concept anyway.

1916 by Motörhead - a ballad about teenagers going off to war in WW1. It's heartbreaking to listen to and always affects me.

Can't You See
This Ol' Cowboy
24 Hours At A Time

These are by The Marshall Tucker Band and I love these songs but they often bring a tear to my eye. They were one of my late twin brother's favourite bands and hearing these songs often affects me.

By The Time I Get To Phoenix by Glen Campbell - It just does.
