Harriet Sperling's Wedding Dress

I think that her outfit, although beautifully made, was inappropriate for a divorced person of 46 and who has a child. She did look striking but the outfit was not really suitable for someone approaching middle age.

I thought she looked OK, very average dress really.

There were photos of guests and there was one middle aged woman who looked a fright. She was wearing a very short yellow lace dress with a big blue hat. Her legs were just not right for a mini dress.

Kate, as always, looked stunning. Princess Anne looked sunny and bright as mother of the groom but spoiled the effect by wearing black shoes and a black handbag.

The rule disallowing divorcees from remarrying in church was lifted in 2002. It is now quite the norm with no dispensation needed.

They both looked lovely and very happy. A lot of judgemental and very old fashioned views on here. 🙄

First of all I had to remind myself who she is along with looking up pictures of her in her beautiful wedding dress.

Funnily enough, apart from the very long veil, it’s very similar indeed to my wedding dress in the 1970s, so I loved it.

Who is HS? Never heard of her!

The late Queen thought that Meghan Markle's dress was too white and she probably would have said the same about Harriet's dress .
White dresses didn't become fashionable until Victorian times .
There are many preserved dresses from the Georgian period which are every colour but white .
I might have chosen a cream colour instead of white ,but looking at her colouring -white is a better choice .
I thought that her dress and that of her bridesmaids tasteful .

Good luck to both of them.

When you book a June wedding, you really hope to avoid that kind of weather - but they didn't let it spoil the day.

No they didn’t -it was all smiles.
Sorry to digress slightly but DD had better weather for her late autumn wedding than I had for my summer one. 😄

She was beautiful. The three lovely new sisters coped elegantly with her train, in that downpour.
Everyone looked happy to be there.
Wonderful to see the glorious, floral display inside the church, in a later Facebook post.

While everybody is entitled to their personal opinion, I can’t believe the bitching and snitching about this couple’s church wedding.

Can’t you?

^So can we give them a break,
Please?^

Here’s hoping,
But people are entitled to their opinions.

You’re right, Mollygo,
‘Can’t believe’ ?
Of course I can. It was wishful thinking.

Well each to his/her own...

I'm happy to see the demise of the patriarchal-constructed myth of 'purity' where the unblemished commodity - the bride - is handed over from one man to another whilst both may well have exercised their 'right' to sow wild oats with women who will then be regarded as shop-soiled; not really the kind of women men want to marry, no - these men are entitled to a virgin. Ugh, the hypocrisy!

Let the white dress become a symbol for a new-start, a fresh-page, at the beginning of a new life for a couple.

Eons ago I heard this tale of a debate between two men who were discussing Godliness whilst driving home together one late evening; the driver likened it to 'cleanliness' and abstinence from the sins-of-the-flesh, the other to the purity of a soul determined to 'do-unto-others etc'. Stopping at traffic lights, they both watched as the local prostitute, weary and exhausted, grabbed hold of a very fragile and doddery old man with a heavy bag of shopping dragging him sideways, attempted to cross the road. Holding on to him tightly and carrying his shopping bag, she guided him across it. The passenger pointed to the woman and said to his friend, "there goes God".

There's variations of this parable, but the point is the same.

I, too, aren’t too keen on the idea of wearing a white dress for a second wedding. Ok, not many brides first time round will be - ahem - virgins, but I think that’s what a white dress is meant to signify, purity. I think white dresses look better on a younger bride. Perhaps Harriet didn’t wear a white dress first time round and really wanted to wear one this time. Maybe.

As a devout Christian it must have been very important for Harriet that she married in church, l can also understand her wearing white. I thought she looked very elegant and joyful, might give the faith a shot myself ......🤔

I thought she looked fabulous. Im getting married in August and I am wearing a wedding dress. Im 60. Not a church but it will be wonderful.

Congratulations!

And I hope you both have a lovely day. flowers

No, they didn’t get extra special permission whether because of connections or not
Since 2002, the Church of England accepts that divorced persons can marry again in church under certain circumstances. However:No automatic right: Individual vicars have the right to decline on grounds of conscience.Discussion required: Your vicar will ask frank questions about the past breakdown, what you have learned, and your future hopes.Guidelines: Clergy are guided by the The Faculty Office to ensure there is adequate healing of past hurts and that the previous breakdown was not caused by your new partner

And as for the dress? What hypocrisy over wearing white!
I could count on the thumbs of one hand the virgins I have known who have sashayed down the aisle in justified white.
It was entirely decent for a church wedding, unlike many strapless meringues with plunging necklines or slits up to here to show off plenty of fake tan.
No Camilla was not in off- white, but a buttery yellow cream and Princess Anne looked just fine.
So can we give them a break,
Please?

I liked her dress, the only bit that I thought was less than perfect was the lace over jacket neckline, it seemed too high on her neck. A minor point though.

I thought this too! Almost like she had it on back to front.....but that aside I thought she looked lovely and also the bridesmaids...

I found it ever so surprising (not) that they both got ever so special dispensation from their parish priests to be able to remarry in church. One might almost think they were well connected.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well if it’s good enough for the King…

Charles and Camilla were not married in church, theirs was a civil ceremony by a civil registrar.

MrsQuigley Mon 08-Jun-26 21:26:14

I think she looked beautiful and really happy. As did her new husband. I wish them both good luck.
There do seem to be an awful lot of entrenched opinions about church weddings, divorces, ‘white’ dresses. No wonder Camilla will always get it in the neck.

Rosie51 Just to be clear, same sex couples cannot legally marry in the Anglican church.

The Scottish Episcopal church performs same sex marriage.

I have been to several weddings in churches where the bride and groom have been divorcees.
So have I, including my brother and his new wife.
I’ve also been to several wedding where some of the guests were making rather uncalled for, personal comments about the wedding outfits, whilst waiting during the photo sessions.
One of the nastiest I recall was
^At least she’s wearing off-white!” And then laughed. At least some who heard that, quickly looked away.
Whoever said GN wasn’t like real life.
