I'm unreasonably traumatised

Mid afternoon we had a ring on the doorbell. Thinking it was a delivery, DH went to answer it but didn't comeback as I had expected him to.

I eventually went to investigate and discovered that a truck parked at a house over the road had rolled back, gathering speed, mounted the pavement and dislodged about 25 feet of our front wall.

The wall is granite and has been there (in one form or another) since the 1870s. The owner of the truck says he has a 'mate' who will sort it out.

Our next door neighbour saw it all -including 3 teenage boys who tried to stop the truck by holding onto the door handle (she yelled at them) and she saw the owner chasing it. Luckily, there was no-one on the pavement or cars on the road.

I was fine and was trying to stop the truck owner looking and acting shocked.

Now, I feel dreadful.

Thank you, J52. Not sure the truck owner will be happy about that. But, we are going down that route.

It is a specialist job, don’t let anybody’s ‘mate’ anywhere near it. What a terrible thing to happen, I hope you are both OK after such a shock.

Adrenaline will have supported you initially and you get the attack of the "what ifs" later. All perfectly normal (I was an motor injury claims handler in a former life!)

Dreadwitch Wed 27-May-26 12:32:48

I'd be traumatised because I wouldn't be able to think about anything else other than what could have or might have happened.

Celieanne86 Wed 27-May-26 08:24:35

Terrifying experience for you kitty just relieved that you are not hurt but I would be in a terrible state, but I’m one of those people who always think the worse and what might have been,

Our garden wall was demolished one night by a learner driver girl who wanted to go to the chip shop, I was so mad I got the car keys off her and threw them some distance as she was trying to get away, I was fit and well in those days.

I hope you get it all sorted with your insurance and his mate can take a hike.

How horrible for you .
Thank the Lord that no one was hurt or even killed .
I'd be very cautious of accepting work done by this mate .
He could be a cowboy.
I've had a succession of mates and their poor work .

Very much doubt the driver's mate is skilled in rebuilding a granite wall. That is a specialism. Seems there are plenty witnesses to the event so no problem trying to establish insurance claim. Last thing you'd expect to see on opening your door, no wonder you are shocked, no doubt your DH is too. The positive being no one was injured.

His insurance will pay. My vehicle demolished a wall - my lips are sealed - and my insurance company paid for the rebuild.

FranP Tue 26-May-26 21:29:56

Your shock is partly due to the feeling that it could have been much worse if someone had been in the way

Thank you, J52. Not sure the truck owner will be happy about that. But, we are going down that route.

Yes, insist on like for like including any mature plants. My friend allowed herself to be fobbed off by the "mate" who built a fence instead telling her that the wall was old.

Its an awful shock and I hope you and your husband are feeling better as the day goes on. We had a lorry reverse into our wall and we took insurance details from the drivr - in the end it was all repaired and ok. I hope you can get the insurance company to pay for a good repair.

Rocketstop2 Tue 26-May-26 18:44:56

Sorry Kitty, have only just seen this thread.I hope you and DH are feeling better today after what must have been a big shock.
Thank goodness no one was hurt.

WithNobsOnIt Tue 26-May-26 18:41:13

Sorry about this. You must be really shaken. I know l would be, if this happened to me. To destroy a strong granite wall The truck must have hit with some force

As for this so called handymen. He sounds a bit of a chancer to me.
Was his van even roadworthy? Does he even have van and other insurance?

Do let his mate sort it out for you. Probably another joker

Get your insurance on to it asap.

Good luck

Pattinsonrobert Tue 26-May-26 17:47:36

Glad you are safe

Magenta8 Tue 26-May-26 17:44:17

I sympathise kittylester. I have suffered two similar incidents, one much worse than the other and both left me in shock. Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon.thanks

Sparklefizz Tue 26-May-26 17:38:29

Sounds awful Kitty. What a shock! Glad no one was hurt and that things are already getting sorted out. Hope you can have a peaceful evening.

kittylester Tue 26-May-26 17:33:59

We are feeling less traumatised now - especially as the truck owner came round and said he had informed his insurance company. They have told him to get 2 quotes- one from his mate (who, it turns out, is actually a stonemason) and we have found a other one with really good reviews.

AmberGran Tue 26-May-26 16:46:05

Blimey. I don't think it is unreasonable to be traumatised by that at all.

How on earth could a truck roll-over??

Have a nice cup of tea with some sugar for the shock.

1 think she said it rolled back and hit the wall Ambergran, not rolled over.

Thank you Elegran - just reread it and now it makes more sense. I think I must have been traumatised by the thought of it 😟

Hope you are both feeling a bit less shaky today kittylester

Bestgrammaever Tue 26-May-26 15:53:35

Your trauma is not unreasonable. Good luck to you in finding a craftsman to repair this.

grandmac Tue 26-May-26 15:50:51

Some years ago a lady learner crashed through the fence into my front garden coming to rest just before hitting the house. I invited them in for a restorative cuppa and she seemed alright until I mentioned that it was a good job she came that way as the other way would have taken her over a 50m cliff!!

Thisismyname1953 Tue 26-May-26 14:51:43

I’m sorry this happened to you . I hope you got his details and think you should contact your home insurance. They can send an inspector/engineer to to assess the safety of the wall .
About 10
Years ago a bin wagon was parked front on to our house which is in a corner . The driver hadn’t put the hand brake on . It rolled past my car damaging the full side , it crashed into my DD brand new car which was on our drive and forced it into the front wall of our house.
As the bin wagon belonged to the Council their insurance covered everything . Both cars were put back to new condition . The garden wall was repaired and the house wall was repaired and the window replaced .
It was a big shock when it happened but all years later we can laugh about it . I hope you get over the shock soon . Take care of yourself.

Thanknyiu all for being lovely.

I think I've misled you - the truck was one of those that plumbers/builders have not a haulage type one. The owner is a self employed odd job man.

We have taken photos and will go through our insurance. Our house is not listed but is part of a converted Victorian Board School and in the village conservation area.

I think I need another winegrin

Oh heck 🤣🤣🤣

Sadie5803 Tue 26-May-26 14:31:09

See if any one has evidence on a house camera, then CLAIM THROUGH HIS INSURANCE...NOT YOURS..

Silvertwigs Tue 26-May-26 14:22:30

Kitty! I read this with bated breath, I’m traumatised for you 🤗 insurance and their legal team is an absolute must 🌷🌷

Retroladytyping Tue 26-May-26 14:09:50

Oh my goodness! Quite understandable to feel traumatised - it's the what ifs? Those boys were very brave, foolhardy but brave. Thank goodness no-one was hurt. Yes, definitely go through your insurance. That's what you pay for. Hopefully the driver is insured, but even if not, the insurance company will know what to do. They'll have seen that type of thing before.

kittylester Tue 26-May-26 14:07:08

We are going through our insurance co who will contact his insurance co. We want it all done very 'officially'.
