I'm unreasonably traumatised

Mid afternoon we had a ring on the doorbell. Thinking it was a delivery, DH went to answer it but didn't comeback as I had expected him to.

I eventually went to investigate and discovered that a truck parked at a house over the road had rolled back, gathering speed, mounted the pavement and dislodged about 25 feet of our front wall.

The wall is granite and has been there (in one form or another) since the 1870s. The owner of the truck says he has a 'mate' who will sort it out.

Our next door neighbour saw it all -including 3 teenage boys who tried to stop the truck by holding onto the door handle (she yelled at them) and she saw the owner chasing it. Luckily, there was no-one on the pavement or cars on the road.

I was fine and was trying to stop the truck owner looking and acting shocked.

Now, I feel dreadful.

Oh Kitty how awful for you. You are probably in shock, Thank goodness there were no injuries . I’m sure your insurance will sort it out.
💕

I don't think it's down to Kitty's insurance to sort it. That's what the van's insurance is for! Good luck and sorry you had to go through this.

no mates help get in touch with your insurance and a proper stone mason if its that old. Would be a shame to ruin such history
have a sweet tea for shock

Goodness - what a shock this must have been for you!

I'm so sorry this has happened.
Certainly not unreasonable to be traumatised by such an event.

I hope it is repaired without delay and you can, once again, admire your lovely granite wall.

Desdemona Tue 26-May-26 10:13:36

That is horrible, glad nobody was physically hurt.

As everyone else has said, don't let his mate do any repairs, no matter what a good job he says they will do.

What a shock for you all. Thank Heaven, no one was hurt.
It will take a little while, but your insurers will deal with it.

Not unreasonably at all: heck of a shock. 💐

fancyflowers Tue 26-May-26 07:52:22

What an awful thing to happen. It's totally natural to be traumatized by it.

Your insurance should sort out the wall but unfortunately the insurance company can't compensate you for the shock. Take care.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 26-May-26 07:34:31

What a terrible experience, kitty. So glad to hear that you have recovered from the initial shock.

dragonfly46 Tue 26-May-26 07:28:21

So sorry to hear this kitty.

MawsRosie Tue 26-May-26 06:55:58

Perfectly reasonable kittylester and as others have said, get it surveyed properly for their insurance claim - don’t trust “his mate”

kittylester Tue 26-May-26 06:38:32

He is fine now, scribbles, thank you. He had the same sort of delayed shock too.

Scribbles Tue 26-May-26 01:13:42

Not unreasonable at all, kittylester. Just give yourself a little time and the shock will fade into the background. Is your husband okay?

No wonder you're shaken and what a nightmare. I'm wondering if the driver is actually not insured hence why he suggested his mate fix your wall.

That’s what I’m wondering too!.

You might need to speak to your solicitor or at least give them a ring tomorrow and ask for some advise. Stone masons are not cheap and you will need a good one. Whatever you do, you must not let those people near your wall again.

I do not think it is unreasonable to feel traumatised! Our minds automatically head off into the what-ifs.

Runaway trucks create carnage. A friend of mine received a phone call at work from one of her neighbours telling her to go home urgently. When she arrived, she found a very large furniture delivery truck embedded in the front of her house. It had been making a delivery to a neighbour's house further up the road, when the handbrake had failed, lorry careered down the road, across several gardens and came to a halt when it hit friend's house.
Their front door, hallway and kitchen were pretty much demolished and the family had to move to temporary accommodation whilst the house was made safe; it took months to repair and, despite it clearly being the delivery company's fault, they didn't make repair and restitution easy. I hope yours is much easier and quicker kittylester

What an awful thing to happen. I hope you and your DH are beginning to get over the shock. Commiserations to you both, also for the hassle of getting all sorted.

merlotgran Mon 25-May-26 22:24:03

Hope you get a good night’s sleep, kitty.
Nobody was hurt. That’s the main thing.

Grannybags Mon 25-May-26 22:08:01

No wonder you feel traumatised. That must have been quite a shock!

Good luck getting it all sorted. I hope it doesn’t drag on too long

Millie22 Mon 25-May-26 21:59:05

kitty
So sorry to hear about the wall. It isn't just any wall as there is such a lot of history with it.

Look after yourself.

M0nica Mon 25-May-26 21:49:10

Nothing unreasonable about your trauma. Something like that is frightening to watch, not knowingwhere it will stop. I am with those recommending wine and an early night.

Ashcombe Mon 25-May-26 19:58:03

What a dreadful experience, kittylester! So sorry to hear this.

I'm glad you're going through your insurance company. Some years ago, when a drunken driver crashed into our perimeter wall damaging the garden, the police attended and recommended we report it to our household insurance company for them to deal with the driver's motor insurer.

It took a while to be put right but it didn't cost us anything. Try not to worry too much (easy for me to say!) as it will all come right eventually.

kittylester Mon 25-May-26 19:49:32

Ouch, petra, that sounds awful.

petra Mon 25-May-26 19:47:03

I know how you feel.
Many years ago I was in a very very old house when a small lorry literally came through into the front room.
I hit a house myself, once.
Raining, going round a right hand bend driver coming towards me lost control on the bend. I instinctively turned left to avoid him and hit the house ( no front garden full on.

Naughtyneine Mon 25-May-26 19:46:36

Kitty...vino is definitely needed. I hope you feel better really soon. X

SueDonim Mon 25-May-26 19:37:04

25ft! How terrifying! So glad no one was hurt, though. X
