LIGHTHEARTED THREAD 😆

That wonderful Bulgarian song won Eurovision last night, (I went to bed before the result), and there's a great word to describe the present chaotic world situation.

Bangaranga!!!!! Meaning commotion or disturbance.

The staging was brilliant, probably not far off a cabinet meeting scenario! Well done Dara! (Wasn't there a Dana who won once too!)

We, the UK, came bottom, with un point ! That just about sums things up!

Bangaranga!!!!

We usually watch it just to laugh and groan and because it's only once a year. We didn't watch it this year, but I looked up the results online just before it ended and watched a few recaps. It was definitely the best song that won but sort of reminded me of other similar things before. I thought the other dancers should have had credit as well as Dara as they were hugely integral to her act.

We never watch - it used to be good in the old days with Katy Boyle. Then it was hilarious with Terry Wogan. Now it is just boring and our entries are abysmal.

Absolute drivel.

I love hearing all the music from different countries. But only 5.2m British people watched the ESC final this year compared with 8m two years ago. Would the disillusioned among you be interested if the UK did better? And would the UK do better if we took it more seriously? We seem to be caught in a death spiral.

Three hours was just too much. I expect many people might have got bored even if they started to watch it; as more and more countries join it will obviously become longer and longer. Many trying to outdo each other trying to be more and more outlandish.

I had heard a small part of the UK entry and knew it was a dud.

I doubt it Maybee70 much more likely that people realise that it’s getting worse as time goes on.

MayBee70 Mon 18-May-26 19:21:16

I think a lot of people boycotted it this year as did I.

very different yo the days of when Volare was the third best song chosen in the 1958 year of the Eurovision Song Contest. Even though it didn’t win it became a very popular song.

BlueBelle Mon 18-May-26 17:48:25

I don’t mind Australia joining but don’t call it EUROVISION call it WORLDVISION.

Allira Mon 18-May-26 17:34:56

Yes, Australia is a very long way away, but apparently they LOVE the show, masses of dress-up parties, big viewing figs, hence they're in it. Maybe Peru/Botswana next time?!

There are many Australians from all over Europe who still feel ties to their home country.
The ones I know are an eclectic mix - you name a competing country and I can probably think of someone from that European country or whose parents/ancestors emigrated from there.

Oreo Mon 18-May-26 17:06:36

Listening to both the winning entry and the losing one today on the radio I thought they were equally awful.

Silvertwigs Mon 18-May-26 16:44:27

I’ve never watched it 🙄

Estrellita Mon 18-May-26 16:04:20

I won't watch it again.

I really liked the new expanded version at first because there was so much variety and everything was very professional and a lot of it was entertaining.
It has depended on the year with 2021(I think... the San Marino song "Adrenalina" and a wonderful Ukranian song ( with the singer dressed like a sort of green fluffy duck) being a year where I thought about five of the songs were absolutely cracking.
I agree that Saturday night's showing was abysmal with the exception of the bloke dressed as a cat who at least made me laugh . I only really liked the Italian song. I think that the UK deserved "Nul points" ( the pity point doesn't count but thank you Ukraine). What were they all thinking ?
I might not bother next year.
Thought the presentation was abysmal as well with the exception of Graeme Norton. Thank God for Graeme.

DrWatson Mon 18-May-26 14:36:52

For many on here -- and yes, I hate it too -- it's kept on our TV because -- LIKE IT or not!! -- it gets very big viewing figs. Is that so hard to follow???

I detest that Jungle nonsense too, and assorted others shows, but I can recognise that if they're popular, they'll be kept going.

Yes, Australia is a very long way away, but apparently they LOVE the show, masses of dress-up parties, big viewing figs, hence they're in it. Maybe Peru/Botswana next time?! And apparently, if Oz won, the next show would be somewhere actually IN Europe. Speaking of which, indeed, Israel isn't strictly speaking in Europe, but I'm advised from my sports consultant that in 'Euros' football, the likes of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan may well be playing, and the latter has a border with China?

I quite accidentally saw our entry, on the Thursday evening, for reasons I couldn't clarify, despite it being a semi-final, and the UK entry gets directly into the final (money talks?!), we were 'treated' (?!) to a run through - a dress rehearsal perhaps?

I was amazed to hear "UK" as I was changing channels, so watched it to the blessed end, when the sadly talentless tuneless lad who'd been chosen got to the end and shut up.

I've seen that articles have appeared since the actual show, asking why, if we came second a few years ago with a decent song and performer, the BBC doesn't try to repeat THAT formula? Answers on a postcard?

Oh, and for those talking of 'Paul, he writes a good song', I gather that actual PROPER 'artistes' do NOT WANT TO KNOW, in case their involvement comes 17th (etc)?!

As the Thursday 'performance' came to an end, Graham Norton said it was a "big banger" (& it was noisy). The chap with the nuclear teeth (Ryland? - he's on almost everything), said "awwwww, I hope he gets something" . . . . .yes, quite, neuralgia came to mind, then he can suffer too?

monami Mon 18-May-26 13:56:18

it won to spite Israel, the same as Ukraine won a couple years ago because it was at war, its all political, nothing to do with singing, otherwise Delta Goodrun would have won

Peaseblossom Mon 18-May-26 13:51:22

dragonfly46 Totally agree with you. I haven't watched it for years, because it's absolutely crap. And all the politically biased voting is annoying. I used to watch it years and years ago with, as you say, Katie Boyle and Terry Terry Wogan, but not now.

Fara56 Mon 18-May-26 13:46:00

At least come Last if you’re not going to come First. Ridiculous programme

He actually looked like Jesus too with the hair, imo.
But who knows!??

Jesus would probably have had short hair as was normal for Jewish men at the time 😀

mae13 Sun 17-May-26 11:55:34

It's a 1950's novelty and that's where it should have stayed.

God alone knows what significance or credibility it's ever had.

friendlygingercat Sun 17-May-26 11:54:26

I didnt even know it was on! Too busy with other things.

BlueBelle Sun 17-May-26 11:54:05

Can anyone tell me why so many entries are sung in English?
and why we sung in bits of German It’s all totally bizarre
I know we re all getting on but I don’t know any young people who watch it either so who are the ones who support it ?

We had such a good and successful song from Sam Ryder four years ago why on earth did this song which was
complete garbage get through.

Sam Ryder was guest performer on Britain's Got Talent last night, with a song from Tim Rice's and Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar
Amazing voice, and such emotion. Worth a look. A million miles better than our UK singer this year.

He's starring in the production of Jesus Christ Superstar and it has proved to be so popular they have had to extend the run at another theatre.

Magenta8 Sun 17-May-26 11:46:36

I only watched Bangaranga and Eins, Zwei, Drei. Both rubbish IMO.

Can anyone tell me why so many entries are sung in English?

The songs seem to occupy a genre all of their own and don't relate musically or vocally to current pop songs.

Joanofarc99 Sun 17-May-26 11:42:12

Terrible song . I used to love the Eurovision song contest but it's all become too political and a bit silly now
