Shopping

Shopping seems to have become an activity/hobby rather than simply a way of acquiring the things you need or want. My DD is in a big ciy today to take DGC to a university open day. She is so looking forward to going round the shops. It is my idea of hell!

I used to enjoy pottering around the shops a bit when I was younger but reached my end with it when in a huge shopping centre in Manchester looking for a mother-of-the-bride outfit and just told myself Never Again! I hated the whole atmosphere - that horrible enclosed musak space - groan!

Thank goodness for online shopping.

Am I the only person who hates it!?

I enjoy a good browsing afternoon, even if I don't have anything in mind that I need to purchase.

Mind you, I live in a smaller town with not many choices for shopping, so when visiting other town or on holidays I set aside an afternoon to shop, often with no end goal. Quite often I will come home with a new lipstick and scented candle.

I'm sure the novelty would wear off if I lived nearby plenty of shops.

I don’t like shopping with anybody I like it totally on my own I haven’t got to worry I m boring them with the things I m looking at and I certainly don’t have to be bored by them going to shops I m not interested in
So it’s solo shopping for me

I prefer solo shopping too but it’s quite good if Mum comes along too as she enjoys browsing and is really good with styles and colours if clothes shopping. She also insists we have cakes with our coffee so I can blame her😁
I don’t like shopping with DP much as like most men he’s soon had enough and most of my friends and DD’s will shop til they drop.

If I need anything I go out and shop for it, do not order on line, like to see items. If i go to a village with independent shops do like browsing.

When I was younger and had a bit of a shape I enjoyed shopping but didn’t have much money. Older, misshaped but have some money I can’t find clothes that I like, to look smart or even good in. Moreover, if I do happen onto something it is to be dry cleaned. The shop assistant on my refusal to buy because of this, immediately chirps, that she has bought and it washes well, contrary to my expensive experience that clothes don’t even in cold water. So I don’t like shopping.

😁Catch 22 isn’t it?

I loved browsing and can afford to buy something if it takes my eye BUT:

Now DH want to come and is quite a bully
- he huffs and puffs if I take a few minutes to look or decide
- if I look at, say, trousers, he will tell me that we came out for a jacket and march off
- recently hunting for a softer bra, he was picking out what I should look at!

Shops are not fully stocked and you get "if it is not out, we don't have it"

Some of my friends come back from holiday and say they went shopping in M&S!!!

We went in M&S in Malta just to see if it was different!

M&S in Gibraltar is very different to the uk. You are spoilt for choice.
I asked one of the assistants why it was so much better than the uk.
She said the buyers had free range from the whole M&S range whereas uk shops have to take what they are given.

Indeed! - tell me what you like about it ......

It’s a feeling thinking I might just find the perfect item I didn’t even know I wanted…. 😀

I like a mooch.
Charity shops, punctuated by lots of coffee breaks, and sitting on benches, watching the world go by

chrissie13 Fri 15-May-26 21:22:20

I love any sort of shopping. I love the charity shops especially and hunting for bargains.

I went to Lidl with a friend. She spent half an hour examining things and bought nothing. Never again!

Same as lot of posters here I used to really enjoy shopping and could happily spend a day mooching around.
I live near a big shopping mall in Essex but have no interest in going there at all now.
Although I have a good friend who still enjoys it especially London’s west end so glad it’s not just me then.

I think the female population is probably fairly evenly divided on this question.

I used to love going round department stores, even in the days where I certainly had no money to spare for impulse shopping.

I would still love to do so, if there were any department stores left. The small boutiques that only cater either for the very young women, or for what that marvellous creation of Andrew McAll Smith¨s, Mma Ramotswe calls "the traditionally built woman" cannot attract me who weighs only 55 kg and is 75.

Catless Fri 15-May-26 15:54:24

That's exactly why I like to go to charity shops - never know what you're going to find and generally at a reasonable price.

Patsy70 Fri 15-May-26 15:33:55

I dislike shopping with a vengeance, although happy to browse the little, independent shops in the side street. Zara & Primark in Barcelona? Why?

monami Fri 15-May-26 15:13:33

primark, really

monami Fri 15-May-26 15:12:49

i hate the big towns and shops and supermarkets, but i love going around little antique shops and charity shops in small towns and villages and i love an open air carboot.

SaxonGrace Fri 15-May-26 14:25:48

I can’t get any enjoyment from trailing round the shops, unless it’s a fabric shop when I can add to my stash of unused fabric just waiting for a project or a yarn shop as I’m teaching myself to crochet, I’ve enough handbags, shoes, clothes make up to last me if I live another 20 years.

Casdon Fri 15-May-26 14:22:39

I like shopping if I’m on my own and have time for a meander - I could very happily spend an hour or two in the John Lewis in Cardiff. What I don’t like is the travelling time and the traffic in the city, so I don’t go often. I don’t mind food shopping, as long as I vary the supermarket, as they are all only good in some areas.

Bazza Fri 15-May-26 14:15:46

I used to absolutely love clothes shopping and often went to two different towns in one day. Now, I can’t stand it, being in a shop full of clothes gives me sensory overload and I can’t wait to get home to my iPad.

Good for you - I also love clothes shopping and part of the experience is coffee and lunch. I live rurally and get plenty of exercise and fresh air so I enjoy the change of scenery and fashionable clothes. My late mum and mil always dressed really well. I can wear my gardening clothes any day. I like spending my money - I earned it over a long career.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 14-May-26 14:15:58

I am back from Lakeside.

I purchased the skincare products I needed (wanted) along with two pairs of sandals.

Rather disappointed on the clothes front, but then again I was only there three weeks and purchased things then.
