King Charles today

I know this has been brought up on the thread about the King's speech today but I didn't want to hijack the thread.

I was quite shocked by the King's appearance and demeanour today. I hope he's just having a bit of an off day (or not much liking what he had to read to the nation!).

He has kept up a very brave and stoic public persona, but he definitely didn't look or sound himself.

Right from the time he addressed the nation shortly after his Mother passed away, I always think of Shakespeare's Henry 1V -

"Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown"

Oh for goodness sake, there he sits, the example of ultimate privilege, under a dead animal, dripping in jewels that could probably sort out the homeless crisis in one fell swoop, reading hypocritical rubbish - the only good thing about him is that he might look/feel less than convincing! Anyone who has the energy to sympathise with him and 'poor' Camilla has a rather skewed sense of values in my opinion - sorry!

According to DD, he was very chipper at the Garden Party which , as it was to celebrate 50 years of the King’s Trust, is a charity very dear to his heart. More than could be said about Starmer’s Kings Speech.

I think he looks tired, in the picture posted above too. He is probably ready for his period of restoration at Balmoral over the summer.

I have just read the BBC article about the planned reduction in the Soverign Grant in 2027. There was apparently an indirect reference to this in the King's Speech. Maybe he was thinking, as some models do, "it won't be worth getting out of bed for this in the future"!

I think he was probably just fed up!
DD reported him in good form at today’s Kings Trust Golden Anniversary garden party at Buck House. 👑

I thought that it looked very unwell yesterday and that this reflected in the delivery of the speech. However he is unwell, has been on a stressful tour to the US and was wearing a heavy crown and robes. I think most people in those circumstances would find this difficult. He was probably also thinking of the political turmoil to come and how this will completely overshadow the contents of the speech (so a waste of his time).

I have seen quite a few pictures/films of his visit to Golders Green today. He didn’t look as unwell and engaged with a wide range of people, showing genuine interest. I am pleased to have seen this.

I too was shocked at the Kings appearance yesterday, but then today I saw he was in Golders Green with the Jewish community and he looked totally different, beaming and sprightly . Personally I think being in Westminster dragged him down !

Ktsmum Thu 14-May-26 17:57:21

I thought and looked very disinterested in what he was reading, a bit like reading a shopping list, he looked very tired, going through the motions

Peaseblossom Thu 14-May-26 16:07:38

orly pity he didn't stand up and say Starmer you are a traitor and responsible for a huge decline in the UK and storm off!!!

Peaseblossom Thu 14-May-26 16:04:45

I'd rather spend a couple of weeks with Trump than Starmer!

TillyTrotter Thu 14-May-26 15:56:14

A tad unkind merlotgran?
The Prince of Wales was at 2 events last weekend for example (when most working people relax);
he has 3 children,
and a wife who also had Cancer treatment.

Bazza Thu 14-May-26 15:33:46

I was just going to post exactly the same thing orly so now I won’t bother!

Fallingstar Thu 14-May-26 15:32:51

I thought the King looked weary, and well he might, with a stressful visit to the US, and then having to wear all the royal regalia, which must weigh a lot, to do the King’s speech. He is in his late seventies and recovering from cancer so the poor man needs a break. Luckily his mother didn’t suffer from such ill health until the end but the King had certainly been unlucky with regard to this.

MartavTaurus

We just said the same watching the news.
He sounded very fed up and looked unwell.

Wouldn't you look fed up having to read out Starmer's regurgitated wish-list know that it was he and his Cabinet that have prevailed over the continued decline of the UK?

WithNobsOnIt Thu 14-May-26 15:06:21

Don't think he looked well during the Kings Speech. But it not the sort of event he could postpone

US tour and flight s must have been very taxing for him

Let's hope he can now have a good rest. "Camilla. Get the Kettle on"

jakuss Thu 14-May-26 14:54:37

So much concern for someone who you dont know, he would have you arrested if you ever got near him

Colls Thu 14-May-26 14:34:00

Don't forget he has recently travelled to the US and back AND had to spend time with someone like Trump. hmmangry
Enough to make anyone need a couple of weeks relaxation to recover.

merlotgran Thu 14-May-26 13:54:08

I expect William will scrap a lot of things. He doesn’t work anywhere near as hard as Charles did when he was Prince of Wales.

Witzend Thu 14-May-26 13:46:11

That crown must be so heavy and uncomfortable! TBH I’m surprised they haven’t scrapped the need to wear it. I bet William will scrap it when it’s his turn.

jomo Thu 14-May-26 13:43:54

I thought the king looked awful, and the way he held on to camalla hand was a unusual sight ... God bless him,..

Jaxjacky Thu 14-May-26 13:41:47

He looked and sounded a lot more relaxed visiting Golders Green this morning.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 14-May-26 12:54:14

Of course it is relevant to mention the Prince of Wales as it is to mention Camilla who must have been anxious about her husband who looked unwell in such a public occasion.

henetha Thu 14-May-26 12:43:00

I think to mention the Prince of Wales is relevant to the thread.

Anniebach Thu 14-May-26 12:38:33

This thread is about King Charles not The Prince of Wales

henetha Thu 14-May-26 12:31:05

I hope so, Lovetopaint. I'm a fervent monarchist but would like to see it modernised.
