Has anyone got a really good lemon zester?

I’ve got a Good Grips one, that used to be brilliant, but seems to have become blunt! It was a real effort earlier, to zest just one lemon for a drizzle cake.

I got a microplane one, but gave up on it as every time I used it I was wounded. They are so sharp they are lethal. Lemon juice on a grated finger is not fun.

Microplane wouldn’t use anything else

Another vote for Microplane

I've also got the microplane one, it does get off a lot of fine zest and doesn't dig down into the pith.

And chocolate

Microplane every time. Good for Parmesan too.
Available in different sizes of grater gauges.

I think I’ll try that Masterchef one, thanks everybody. I will certainly need it for the next mega lemon meringue pie!

Microplane are supposed to be the rolls royce of.graters. I keep meaning to get myself one.

I have also read that you should put greaseproof paper over the grater before zesting, (most practical with box graters) but I always found it tore once it got damp. Cling film just tears, damp or dry. If you can manage to prevent that, the paper can be peeled off leaving the grater clean and the zest can then be scraped off the paper with the blunt side of a knife.

I have a sma!! grater, not very good quality, which I use and always grate directly into the mixture or the pan, scrape all the zest from back and front, then chuck it in the dishwasher.

Best results depend on

- the fruit being really fresh with a nice crisp skin,
- Nice sharp grater
- Grating immediately before use, not leaving it to dry out

Love the smell of lemon zest!

I think a few of us have mentioned having a microplane.

They are really good for all sorts of things, aren't they?

Yes :-) I have this one. Bought specially a number of years ago and it's great. It was expensive but I did my research and decided to get something that would do the job well. Had it over 10 years now and it still works as it should. www.lakeland.co.uk/26173/microplane-premium-classic-series-zester-grater

Side of the box grater.

I have a very tiny box grater that is good for zesting lemons, grating garlic, nutmeg, and tiny shavings of truffle or hard cheese. It came out of a Christmas cracker ages ago!

Another microplane here.
Have a good grips one but only use it if I want strips of zest.

Microplane.

Side of grater, find it does the job.

I use my microplane which i also use for parmesan, nutmeg and anything else that needs to be finely grated.

I have read that a box grater can be wrapped in cling film or baking parchment before using for zesting, which makes it easier to wash.

I love my microplane so have never tried anything else.

Oh, good suggestions here - funnily enough I made a lemon drizzle cake yesterday using my box grater, but it's such a pain to clean afterwards. I am now off to have a look for some of the ones suggested here.

I have a microplane one. It’s very sharp still, and I’ve had it years, so although they are expensive, I feel it has been a good buy.

Another for tkmaxx. Plenty of choice there.

Marmin Tue 12-May-26 11:50:17

Glad we agree!

X post Marmin sorry

My Oxo Good Grips yesterday also became blunt which was annoying because it was quite expensive. I went into TK Maxx a couple of weeks ago and they had a good selection from £4.99 up to £15.99. I bought a Joseph Joseph one for £10.99 and it's pretty good with different grades on the one plane. If you have a TK Maxx near you, maybe worth having a look.

Maybe you need a microplane zester?
I was given one of these years ago but didnt really use it. I tend to do a lot of lemons or limes or whatever at once and I suppose I find the box grater easier.

I think most chefs would use a microplane type.
