'Old Lady shops'

I made myself laugh today as I saw something I liked in a leaflet for what I used to term 'An old lady shop' ! It kind of put me off, although I have sent for the clothing to try.
It got me thinking, even though we are older now, are there still shops you feel you might be too young to buy from? I aim this at all ages too, as we are all only a certain age in our own heads.
I can remember as a young girl wearing Marks and Spencer stuff that My Mum had bought and vowing 'When I'm grown up I shall NEVER shop at Marks and Spencer.' (I did !!)
So, anyone else??

^Young men like to wear suits two sizes too small, very tight jeans and Tees with sarcastic comments on them, also tight.
The average older men I see like checked shirts and chinos with a jumper or fleece.^

Not in my world. I have yet to see a young man in a suit. Young men wear shapeless trousers or shorts and T shirts.

Older men wear jeans, T shirts or open necked shirts with sweaters over them.

I wear those M&S joggers all the time. And similar from Lands End in the sale.

They are just tops for comfort and look good too, and the size range astonishing both leg and size wise.

I like Seasalt, Roman and Fat Face for their petite ranges. It’s not easy being a shrimp smile. I am a little ole lady and I don’t give a damn!

Yes, I agree with you about Seasalt. I have been buying their clothes for years and now have many mix and match tops and trousers and woollies in different shades and patterns with blue as the base colour.

Seasalt has a "tall" range too.

In the summer I positively live in Seasalt pure cotton ‘sailor’ stripey tops, elbow length. I must have around 8 in different colours. I’ve had some of them for at least 6 years - still good.*

I recently ordered 2 pairs of Seasalt linen trousers too - to replace the ones I’ve had for 4 years, now frankly worn out.

*they are a bit too warm for seriously hot days, but we don’t usually get too many of those (at least I hope not!) and I no longer go on holiday to very hot climates.

Whenever we have these threads people talk of looking ‘smart’ as if that’s the aim. Not for me! I don’t mean I aim to look scruffy, but day to day most of us choose somewhere in between, surely - tidy, but comfortable, and - depending on our inclination - trendy, or not. Occasionally, if the occasion dictates it, I would aim to look smart, but that’s pretty rare these days. I guess by now, we all have our style and our preferences and will stick to them……

OH told our DD she looked "very smart" in her wedding dress! He couldn't understand why I found this inappropriate

NotTooOld Mon 04-May-26 12:33:18

Definitely not frumpy!

JaneJudge Mon 04-May-26 12:16:03

I agree.

My husband and I aim for tidy not trendy.

Church clothes, jeans, golf and tennis clothing suit us well. I can't imagine us ever wearing anything different to what we've always worn.

I buy virtually everything from White Stuff. Their market seems to be 60+ women but their clothes are definitely not old ladyish and the stores and staff are lovely.

I like White Stuff too and Lands End

M and S have some lovely straight leg joggers that are smart and really comfortable, at £16 they are a snip. I paired them with a cashmere sweater and nice clean trainers and thought they looked as good as some that I've paid 3x the price. I just wish they had pockets though but I guess that would increase the price. Watermeadow you can order online which is possibly cheaper than doing a 40 mile round trip by car.

I have those and prefer them without pockets.
The waistline is elasticated but smooth, no gathers!

My town is rich in old lady shops, most of which I’ve never been in as they’re aimed at rich old ladies. If you want M&S pants and basics you have to have a car and drive 20 miles.

Well tracky bottoms are currently right on trend, but .....

Thank you all those who replied. As MrJ is a mere youngster, early 60’s, I think he’ll continue as he is for now, but now I know.

I'm sure my husband will continue on in his fitted trousers (No elastic) for Church. Jeans everyday and shorts for golf.

He's slim and looks smart in the same clothes as our Sils.

DH too, apart from occasionally at home. Smart trousers or chinos.

He has never worn a pair of jeans in his life.

Are there shops for ‘old men’ too?

I'm not aware 'old man' clothing is different to 'young man' clothing. There are shops with 'men's clothing' in the town nearest to us.

Well they do differ Norah

I give you "Chums" for men. Affordable. I give you a good example page.

www.chums.co.uk/menswear/trousers/elasticated-waistbands

DH has a couple of pairs of 'fleece leisure trousers for lounging around in. I bought them for him for comfort after an operation.

He wouldn"t go to the shops in them
(Not with me, anyway).

Although they are no different from those I see much younger men wearing,

A very ageist thread!

No it isn't. It is a group of older people, having a joking conversation about the kind of clothes shops which stocks the kind of clothes we are assumed to wear.

When I was a child I was told that priests knew all the best jokes about priests, and enjoyed them and shared them. This is what we are doing.

A light-hearted thread of a kind we are much in need of.

MissAdventure Sun 03-May-26 21:37:39

So, men must have "high ends" to shop in most of these places?

Why no specific shops except for high end mens stuff? Maybe many wives or children buy their clothes for them? sp for example Chums is for men and women and we had heard of it for women, but they have a large mens section.
