How do you hang your washing out?

I've always hung tops from the bottom and trousers etc from the waist but I went to a relative's at the weekend and she hung shirts and tops from the shoulders, which I thought was unusual.

Trousers from waist, tops bottom up and on the seam

However my washing is hung on my retractable line across my patio it annoys the gulls and wood pigeons who remove pegs and drop my knickers on the steps!

My MiL implied I was a slut because I hung sheets over the line not the ends on the line!
I dry things together, pairing sock as I go along. Trousers hung from the hem, but jeans from the waist. T-shirts from the bottom but proper shirts are pegged with the collar over the line.
I never leave pegs on the line because, if they are wood, they never dry properly, if they are plastic, they break from exposure to sunlight.

What about pegs do you put them away or keep them on the line?

Lol, Macaydia 😂.

Look, I can't sleep, I'll talk about anything, including laundry!!

I don't have a problem with RGI, as long as you don't divulge names and addresses there's nothing they can do to identify you.

I'm something of a luddite anyway, I don't do Facebook, emails, internet shopping or internet banking, I think I'm clever just being able to do this!! 🤣

Don't judge me 😉😂.

Don’t tell them, Pike!

You've got your money's worth, Moth62!

Have you got a high line (poles and pulleys), a whirlygig or retractable? I've got four retractable lines and put them all away after use. I use line props with them.

Exciting stuff 😂.

My aunt said she was taught to always hang washing on the line in the direction it would be worn. I’m afraid I don’t, which is why she was telling me! And yes, when I had a line of pristine white nappies blowing on the line (talking 40 years ago here), I would always stand back and admire them. Lovely! Funnily enough, I was just using a couple of them today - they make great cleaning cloths and I still have plenty more supplies (as I don’t clean much…)

When it's blowing in the sunshine, yes. When it's just hanging in an onset of drizzle, not so much joy!

TheSunRisesInTheEast Mon 27-Apr-26 22:41:47

Drying anything on the line fills me with joy! 😂

JenniferEccles Mon 27-Apr-26 22:37:21

Talking of hanging out washing did anyone else love the sight of white towelling nappies blowing on the line in the sunshine?

For some reason it filled me with joy.

As my mother taught me. I hang trousers from the bottom of the legs and that way the waist gets more air. Everything else from the bottom but a dressing gown is neatly folded from the bottom. Everything is inside out so that the sun doesn't lighten the clothes.

By my method, no ironing

Shinamae Mon 27-Apr-26 22:13:00

Trousers upside down with two pegs on each of the hem on the bottom..
Most of my other stuff upside down as well, actually….😁
Seems that l am in the minority here…😁

I do as others above for trousers, shirts and jumpers.
Smalls go on a little peg hanger all of their own.

Grannybags and thesunrisesintheeast made me smile because I too hang clothes in batches - though I hang all my things together and OH’s on the opposite side. Household laundry goes on the other two opposing sides. No idea why!

I have a rotary drier and try to hang light things on the inner lines, heavier on the outside.

The same as most others, jeans and trousers from waistband, shirts and blouses upside down from bottom side seams, jumpers in half, pegged under the arms, t-shirts upside down and pegged at side seams with enough folded over the line so as not to sag. I peg knickers and pants up by the waistband, and socks by the toes. I don't hang things randomly, it's all in groups, ie. knickers together, pants together, socks together, trousers/jeans and tops. The pegs have to be matching.

Now if this isn't mundane, I don't know what is! But it's conversation, so I'm happy to share 😂.

My daughter and I always claim not to be neurodivergent in spite of if affecting most of the family, but when she showed me a photo of the school football strip hanging up to dry, she was worrying because she'd got the numbers in the wrong order and I was worrying because she'd hung them upside down!

Astitchintime Mon 27-Apr-26 20:44:28

Woven fabric blouses and shirts are pegged by the bottom of the side seams, sweaters and jersey tops folded over the line and pegged at the under arm/side seam junction, jeans and trousers upside down and pegged at the seams………minimal peg marks and maximum drying potential 💪

I hang my tops on hangers and trousers from the waist - or should I say my husband does wink

62Granny Mon 27-Apr-26 20:26:09

I always hang/ peg trousers at waistband but tops it all depends on the fabric, jumpers and cotton t-shirts under the armpit in case they stretch but other things from the hem.

tanith Mon 27-Apr-26 20:24:16

I hang bottoms from the waist tops some from under the arms and woolies are hung over 3/4 lines of my rotary drying line, underwear goes on a multi peg hanger.

singingnutty Mon 27-Apr-26 20:18:47

Agree with this arrangement OP and it means that the creases from the pegging on the line are less obvious because they are either just below the waistline or, in the case of trousers, probably hidden by the bottom of the top. This reduces the need to iron - always a good idea!

MollyNew Mon 27-Apr-26 20:16:37

It was just an observation! I wondered if I was just being too particular about my laundry habits grin

Casdon Mon 27-Apr-26 20:16:00

I hang tops with the pegs under the armpits so they don’t stretch and the peg marks are not visible. Does that make me a washing line freak?
