I felt like you but apparently we are wrong and that sentiment absolutely exists and has been said, but not as a single famous, traceable quote by one well-known person. It’s more of a political slogan/proverb that’s been used in different forms. Many sources trace its popularization to left-wing activist circles, especially the Black Panther Party in the 1960s–70s.

Even if that exact wording is modern-ish, the underlying idea is older. In 1925, David Lloyd George said: “If you scratch a Conservative, you find a Fascist.”

Surely it's best not to break up a friendship because of that, if people only meet others who think similarly on politics, that's dangerous in so many ways.

Well, thank you for that DAR. You learn something every day. However, I expect Lloyd George knew the difference between Conservatives and Liberals - and he referred to Conservatives. Secondly, I think I'm correct that the Black Panther Party was American, in which case any reference to liberals would have been different from the UK's LibDems. The American and UK definition of liberal (with a small 'l' is different.

Dont over estimate the Green vote they will gain a few seats, all from Labour. Judging by the local Green councilors they even gave the local Liberals voting them down, very extreme views.

OK! I'm confused. You're claim people aren't "political". Yet they're fed up with Labour. If they're not "political", how do they know that Labour is responsible for their daily woes?

I think many of us have spoken up. I'm glad Starmer did not let Trump bully him into complying with his 'order' to join him in an illegal war.

Many of us have, but we are then told that we do so 'blindly' and uncritically, and that disagreeing with his critics is a 'pile on'. Posting on N&P feels a bit pointless these days, so I rarely do it.

Anyway, it would take a lot more than the promise of keeping the triple lock to make me vote Reform. I can't think what would, really. The thought of them taking power scares me.

People are confusing local elections , and what they represent, with general elections.
Do Reform really believe that I will vote for them when their leader is the biggest liar, misogynist, grifter, racist, bigot, cheat this country has ever known? It is full of Tory has beens who show no commitment to their constituents.
Nothing Reform says or “promises” would EVER persuade me to tick their box. However, I would never spoil my ballot paper either as that shows sheer disregard for those who went before us to ensure we can vote.
