Workers in Turkey are better protected and paid than those in Asian countries. Obviously there will be those who are exploited, just as some workers are in illegal sweat shops in towns like Leicester.

But, on balance, conditions are better in Turkey.

I have just bought some clothes from M&S including jeans and they are all made in Turkey.

I've never bought anything from Temu or Shein. They seem to have very aggressive selling tactics once you have ordered from them and you are bombarded with more products to buy.

It is not that simple at all. It’s still possible to support UK or other businesses, which also employ people to make clothes. The cost per item is higher, but the clothes are not disposable. Is it virtue signalling to make a conscious choice?

Let’s not forget the slave Labour/ child exploitation that’s used in the manufacture of perfume.

I've never bought anything from Temu, but I have bought stuff from Shein on a couple of occasions and have no qualms with it whatsoever. Some very high end fashion brands have been found to be exploiting the workers who make their clothes in the past - so it's not just the cheap ones.

I refuse to buy from Temu. They are seriously undercutting Western manufacturers and not all the workers involved are treated well. Once they have destroyed these companies then they will bump up their prices. It’s laughable how so many people moan about self service check outs in supermarkets taking retail workers jobs but rarely a mention for manufacturing workers losing theirs to cheap Chinese rubbish! And let’s not forget the child and forced labour China is known for..

Those western manufacturers sold their principles to the cheapest bidder many years ago.
I don’t know which came first, the Chinese contacting western manufacturers or western manufacturers going to them and asking what is your lowest price
All I know personally is an acquaintance who manufactures industrial clothing has moved his business to 3 different countries.

I think to call people virtue signalling if they have strong opinions on bad, poor, unacceptable treatment of a group of people is a real low thing to say Milsa and a cop out

The same situation with so called FairTrade - the coffee, bananas and all your western pampering. It is not fair trade at all, it is only trade and the whole family including the kids work in the fiields.

Actually when worked for a nice clothing brand, a lady came and said that she would buy anything made in Bangladesh but not from China. LOL.

China is the world's largest manufacturing industrial economy and exporter of goods. Most of what we buy will come from there, either complete goods or the parts they contain.

Temu is just a marketplace, they do not manufacture anything themselves.

I get what people are saying about buying from charity shops, freecycle etc but most of the clothes are made cheaply abroad, and to be honest my local charity shops charge rather a lot for what are effectively second hand goods that have been donated, and we all know how the higher
management of charities are are paid huge salaries. 🤔🤔

But at least if you buy second hand you aren't adding to the mountain of synthetic clothes that will never biodegrade and that are filling landfill
