Who knew it was healthy??? Sometimes I have to laugh at presenters who dish out these words….
So good news news for farmers- will continue to buy full fat milk - apparently it could help with dementia amongst the other factors such as protein 😊

I only drink skimmed due to high cholesterol. I’ve now started using Organic milk( twice the price but no antibiotic fed cows)! My problem is I can find 2 litres in supermarkets. Anyone know where I can get 4litres from?

Wasn’t there something called Bev as well?

Camp coffee is good for flavouring when cooking cakes, biscuits, etc, but not for drinking!

It's annoying when a consensus is overturned. We follow gov. advice and if it changes all we can do is change with it.

Or perhaps decide for ourselves maybe?

When the Gov decided in the 90s that nutritional advice would be science based I was all for it and quite excited that at last we would see some sound advice given to people. The excitement died for me very quickly when I realised that science is like history - you only know what you know now, and tomorrow some further research can tell a whole different story. Research into nutrition is especially dicey because you can't test on humans, so a lot of the data is extrapolated from what we learn about the sick.

Another problem is that having invested billions of pounds in training doctors and other medics, producing training programs, books, teaching aids, showing what today's science shows and how they should be advising the public it's very hard to change the flow and re-educate everyone.

People's reputations are also on the line - they don't want things to change that they have been backing for 20 years. Not to mention a whole raft of the science that is done on foods is done by pharmaceutical companies and food companies, who all want a piece of the pie.

I no longer have any interest in nutritional guidelines and just make my own mind up what to eat.

Sorry, that was a bit long.

Camp coffee and condensed milk. My paternal grandparents drank it (shudder). My sister and I lived with them in the schoolholidays for a few years and would keep creepingninto the kitchen and sticking a finger on the condensed milk can, getting it covered in condensed milk and then licking it off.

Camp coffee .

Thats it Camp coffee...couldn't for the life of me remember...Mother used to drink this with condensed milk!

Ex MIL used to drink Camp made entirely with sterilised milk. She called it stera-java. I thought it was foul, but each to her own, I guess.

I think Camp Coffee probably needed the sweetness of condensed milk to make it drinkble!! 🤣

I have yet to understand what UN-healthy milk might be. (Unless someone starts to milk cats, rats or plague dogs, maybe...)

Going back to childhood memories, I didn’t like milk or butter, and the school milk bottles were always dirty looking so a good friend always used to drink mine although caught out by a nun who made me drink it and I actually vomited it back up …
Was sent home and mother had attend school meeting about it..horrible experience…

Then coffee was brought bought into the house…it was chicory based in a tall thinish bottle- can someone remind me what it was called? As children we were not allowed to drink it…
Now I can’t start my day without a cup or two😊

Gillycats

It’s not that healthy anymore. It contains antibiotics (dairy cows often suffer from terrible mastitis) and now some brands are adding Bovaer.

Milk is tested from the bulk tank before it is collected. If, when it gets back to the dairy it doesn't pass the stringent criteria the whole tanker full of milk will be deemed contaminated and the farmer faces a very hefty fine.
If a cow has to have antibiotics then her milk will not enter the tank.

šŸ™ for this comprehensive information…feel better about milk testing… although years ago, there were no such tests and people of my kin survived into their 90+ ..

Brings back memories as a girl walking from Bosley towards Buxton with mum and nan. We got totally lost and mum stopped at a farm for help. The farmer gave me warm milk straight from the cow. I still remember it. My surgery keep shouting at me over the phone to give up my full English breakfast as I have high cholesterol which is just over 5 by the way. The health care assistant almost gave herself a heart attack screaming at my down the phone about my rich oily breakfasts. Not sure why she got herself in such a state as I don’t eat breakfast at all. Not hungry until about 3 p.m when I enjoy a Mediterranean meal as lived in the Mediterranean most of my life. I will be changing my surgery because of her.

Buy oat or soy milk. Much kinder to the planet and your body.

Soy kinder to the planet?

Please do check that out.

watermeadow Fri 24-Jan-25 20:40:48

And kinder to the cows and their babies. Nobody needs milk once they’re weaned.

Have drunk only full cream Goats milk for many years now. Told a Doctor once answering one of his questions & he said that was ok as it is Goats milk which is better! Dont know about that just that it does not affect my stomach & it tastes much better!

I always drink full fat milk. I make my yoghurt with Jersey milk so it's really creamy. When you remove fat you also remove many of the fat-soluble vitamins and some of the minerals from the food.

I completed my nutrition and dietetics degree in the early 90s (mature student not very young gran! šŸ˜„) when the fat-free fad been going for some years. I remember one of my professors commenting 'She (Rosemary Conley) is probably almost single-handedly responsible for generations of depressed women who are unable to process fat-soluble vitamins or make hormones'.

A friend who is a doctor/consultant told me that everyone should drink a glass of milk and eat a banana every day, That gives you most of the vitamins and minerals you need. A good diet for me with a handful of nuts.

Doctors aren't usually nutritionists though.

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. A dietitian, on the other hand, has to be fully qualified and regulated.

jocork Fri 24-Jan-25 18:36:50

I studied food science and nutrition as part of my degree so I'm aware that the biggest problem we have in diet is sugar not fat! However I don't like full fat milk and only buy it if DS and family visit. I use semi-skimmed but rarely drink it as just milk. I cook with it and put it in coffee. As someone else has said many low fat foods have extra sugar added to make them palatable. The 'Go Ahead' brand of cakes are very high in sugar. After years of eating according to what I know to be best my GP eventually told me I shouldn't worry about fat in my diet, just carbohydrates, especially sugar. I said nothing, but simply thought 'Yes I was right all along!'.

I hated 'school milk' and had to wait until the teacher turned her back and swap my bottle for my next door child's empty one. He actually liked the stuff and regularly drank mine. My MiL drove me nuts trying to get my DD to drink milk as a child. She insisted that she only refused it because I'd taught her not to like it, despite my having tried all ways to get her to drink it. She was horrified a few years later when her DS - now my ex- discovered he was lactose intolerant and no longer touches the stuff!

True but we've been drinking cows' milk for thousands of years.

ExDancer Fri 24-Jan-25 16:08:10

As a farmer's wife, I shouldn't be saying this - but - cows milk is specially produced by cows for baby cows. Once they are adults they stop drinking it.
Human milk is likewise intended for human babies, so why are we still drinking (cows) milk as adults?
