I was optimistic that Labour would be able to set the economy on the right path, prices, particularly fuel prices are still too high but not a lot we can do about fuel. Rents a £ Mortgages too high as well.
With November inflation below expectations, the fall in sterling has been arrested for now, let’s hope for more good news.

Starmer appals me.
Originally I thought he was Corbyn's stooge, then was relieved when he disposed of him, although I thought there would be a hard left-wing coup once he was in power and he would be displaced.
Now it appears he is the hard left coup. The intention to facilitate compensation for the IRA terrorist Gerry Adams is appalling. I remember the time of the Troubles very well, and the Birmingham bombings in particular.
The Guildford bombings were the first here on the mainland. I lived there at the time.
Of he’ll remember, and will remember the enormous relief when the Troubles ended. Many people on both sides made huge concessions in order to allow the agreement to stand, and to save lives, despite the losses they had suffered.
I don’t know how they did it, and have nothing but admiration for them. Wrongs were done by the army, the government of the time, as well as by the IRA and other factions.
Of course wrongful imprisonment is incompatible with human rights laws, and however much people may disagree with Adams’ politics if we start to pick and choose which humans have rights it is a slippery slope.
I don’t know enough about the detail to comment further, but think that using this to make another cheap dig at the government is pretty low. Having said that, Reform are not in favour of the HRA, are they? Terrifying.

A different headline from today
Most of us were adults then. He was born in 1962.
I am sure Starmer recalls much of The Troubles
Yes FGT, it does stink. Starmer can be relied upon to go overboard with so called human rights, given his specialisation when a barrister. Most of us here remember the Troubles. Life at the time was not as it seems today looking back from the perspective of peace. It was an horrendous time. Starmer won’t remember the reality of that terrible period in history.
I despair.
Adams famously said" they haven't gone away you know " post a failed atrocity
Adams was in the IRA and , like his mentor Corbyn supported Sinn Fein/ IRA or he would have walked away from Corbyn. He didn't .
Starmer, you disgust me with this action and I question your patriotism. You are pretty vacuous.

*every one enjoys a bit of doom and gloom mongering don’t they?*
This Labour government certainly does!
Absolutely . Don't care criticise, is their mantra.
For you LizzieDrip:
“GERRY ADAMS is in line for taxpayer-funded compensation because of Sir Keir Starmer’s human rights plans, senior peers have warned.
The former Sinn Fein president is set to benefit from a decision by the Government to repeal Troubles legislation.
The current law blocks his claim for compensation over his detention in prison in the 1970s for suspected involvement in terrorism. But Sir Keir’s plans will reverse two sections of the 2023 Northern Ireland Troubles Act that denied Mr Adams and up to 400 other IRA “suspects” also detained in the 1970s the right to claim compensation. The move has been agreed because a Northern Irish high court ruled that the legislation was incompatible with human rights laws. Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland Secretary, said that the decision to repeal the law underlined “the Government’s absolute commitment to the Human Rights Act”.
The move has been branded “unacceptable” by IRA bombing victims.“

Okay Labour.
Thanks for this. You can’t pay for the WFA, compensate in some small way the WASPI women, bash the farmers, but you can give an IRA quarter master (vile man) taxpayer’s money. And who knows what level of compensation he will get?
It stinks.

I'm a farmer.. small business and medium enterprise owners too are hideously affected by Staarmer FarmerHarmer and Rachel Theeves policies and you will shops and businesses vanishing more and more from your local towns and villages..unless the Labour govt u turn on their current policies..
In what way have the government’s policies affected you, Nan0? It’s good to have someone directly involved to tell us the detail.
Were you planning to sell the farm, or pass it on to family, so you would have to pay tax on anything over the threshold (£4million, if memory serves?) or is there something else they have done that’s getting in the way for you?
Agree

FGT what are you on about? A few verbs might help!
Eek! More gloom and doom on its way …
Labour. Sinn Fein. Gerry Adams. Compensation. ECHR.
I despair tonight.

This Labour government certainly does!
freya criticise away to your heart’s content if it makes you happy.
I prefer to be positive and optimistic for the next five years.
The ‘misleading’ was referring to the thread’s title and its misplacement as it disappointed some people who were looking for a lighthearted moment. But never mind, every one enjoys a bit of doom and gloom mongering don’t they?
lixy
This thread is on Chat - should be in News and Politics.
So is this yet another example of Tory misinformation and ‘stirring’? Certainly several people have been disappointed by the misleading title.
I’m with madeleine45 in that we need grown up politics without all the point scoring, not the knock-about comedy of weekly comics.
Really, "Tory misinformation". Oh dear not allowed to criticise Beryl etc.
CBI call Reeves a disaster for UK business, and they know better than her.
They are a daily comic comedy, never mind a weekly one.

And yet here you are.
Oh dear do you only want to invite people who will think you are so funny and clever?

My income is my state pension and a small csp pension left to me by my husband who died 35 years ago. I was widowed under 40 with two children and had to go out to work in dead end poorly paid work I am just above the threshold for pension credit. Just who are you to judge me?
That's got nothing to do with judgement I'm asking a question about why it is an issue. Tax thresholds has nothing to do with picking on pensioners does it.
My mother was a widow under 40 with 3 children but I don't know what that has to do with anything. My MIL was a widow with a baby in her 20s. They both paid tax just like everyone else.
… ooh can anyone help pull these knives from my back?
And yet here you are.

FGT it's nothing to be proud of so your response tells us all we need to know.
Oh, lighten up! 🤣🤣
No thanks. Name calling of Labour politicians is getting so tedious on here.
