There's always been a load of old unsubstantiated rubbish out there, even before the days of social media, I can remember tales along the lines of "double decker bus found on the Moon" and Elvis is still alive and working in "Burger King" The real mystery is why anyone believes such guff.

Turning to the subject of royal mistresses, I don't think it's true every monarch has had one.. From what I've read,, it seems the late Queen's father, George Vl had a monogamous marriage, as did his father the "Bugger Bognor" King, George V, but of course his father Edward V111 was a notorious old womanising reprobate who was famous for his mistresses. Further back in time, George III was allegedly devoted to his Queen Charlotte, well they had loads of kids to prove that and Charles 1, who carelessly lost his head, was thought to have been faithful to his catholic French wife Henrietta Maria, so much so it was considered by the Parliamentarians she had too much influence on him. But anyway his sons made up for him being a one woman man with mistresses galore.

It's alarming that on YouTube sometimes they put out that celebrities etc have tragically died when they haven't. Sounds definitely like fake news to me.

Btw there is a FB webpage called VT - it keeps flashing up on my page with utter, utter nonsense such as this - despite blocking the site, it still finds a way in.

What is the source for this "news"?

There are numerous fake/"spoof" news sites who churn out this rubbish in the hopes of finding anyone gullible enough to believe it and repost it.

whatever forums do you use? it's Fake News

Gutter press trivia to sell newspapers and advertising.

I think you mean Edward VII. Edward VIII married Wallis Simpson.

TerriBull Sat 05-Oct-24 15:04:41

Oh yes! My mistake Edward VII of course, the other one was only king for 5 minutes.

May I ask Bea65 politely why have you started this thread are you really so ignorant of life in 2024 or is there a bit of mischief making going on ‘Rev up the haters sort of thing?’

No I ‘m not being malicious and don’t believe I’m ignorant either… I was wondering whether other GNs had similar news whether fake or not …as I said it is gossip- if we banned all gossip/news items- what would we discuss. 👩🏽‍💻 and for the record I’m not a hater of ROYALS …

Beg to differ,
“Have you heard…?”
“Hope it’s not true…”
“Might be just gossip but it’s on TWO social media platforms”
The latter being renowned for their veracity - as if!
And if we banned gossip what would we discuss ? (It is NOT a news item, BTW, but malicious rumour)
Well, how long have you got - social issues, justice/injustice, food, drink, grandchildren, gardens, pets, politics, help or loneliness……
Finally you could always check out Eleanor Roosevelt.

I'm not sure I despise the old-fashioned over-the-garden fence gossip - & there's a fine line between well-meaning nosiness, wanting to know if anyone needs help, & the purely salacious. Back in the day, you'd have people who were known for spreading rumours & putting 2 & 2 together to make 5, so you'd just nod your head & take it with a pinch of salt. Others you'd know as pretty reliable. But on the internet it can start from one obscure poster & be everywhere next day & no-one really knows where it's come from . It's 1000 times more worrying.

It has been all over social media for months, if not years, but not in any newspaper, as far as I know, so it’s all about ‘engagement’ for the posters. They also know they won’t be called out by the royals, so can post all sorts of nonsense.

Allira Sat 05-Oct-24 16:23:22

Orf with their heads, I say!

AGAA4 Sat 05-Oct-24 16:34:54

Some evil minded people around. It seems they actually hope the gossip is true and that others are miserable.

Norah Sat 05-Oct-24 16:37:09

I assume none of that is any of my business - I don't know them, don't care how they live their lives. I sweep my side of the lane.

Sounds like silliness, to be ignored. If anyone needs to know, they'll be told.

silverlining48 Sat 05-Oct-24 16:51:13

I am not on SM other than GN so havnt heard about any of this. It would be sad if this were true of course and in these days of fake news it probably isn’t, but have to say in years gone by we knew about many royal scandals ie PrincessMargarets divorce and also the problems Charles had in his first marriage, long before it was known here.
Our information came from European friends whose press were always very interested in our royal family and did not need to hold back on any scandal.

Anniebach Sat 05-Oct-24 17:05:12

Is a divorce a scandal ?

Rekarie Sat 05-Oct-24 17:08:18

The Sussex Squad appears to spread a lot of this sort of awfulness

Anniebach Sat 05-Oct-24 17:53:06

It was H who told the world that he unlike other male members of his family married for love

silverlining48 Sat 05-Oct-24 18:38:57

Adultery and divorce certainly were a scandal in the 60 s with P.Margaret and Armstrong jones.
With Charles it was more of a shock, to me at least.
My point was people in Europe knew a lot more than we did.

escaped Sat 05-Oct-24 18:54:24

I agree with silverlining. That people in mainland Europe are less sensitive when it comes to talking about all aspects of royal life. Not just the British royals, although they do feature heavily in foreign papers and magazines. Europeans don't shy away from asking questions, seeking out stories, and consequently making their own assumptions.

Anniebach Sat 05-Oct-24 18:55:14

Margaret and and Snowden divorced in the mid seventies, there were many photographs of her before her marriage, smoking in public, dancing etc, so the divorce was no surprise

Just click- bait, so annoying!

silverlining48 Sat 05-Oct-24 18:59:49

They may have divorced in the mid 70 s, I don’t know as I am not overly interested in the royal family, but this was all going on in the late 60 s when most of us didn’t know.
As for Margaret drinking and smoking, dancing too, my goodness,, doesn’t mean a divorce is on the cards.

Sounds fake. Daily Mail at it again?

You obviously don’t read it.
Why do people repeat this Shite 🤷‍♀️
