Anyone had a road closure for several days?

So my nephew and his mate went round on tuesday and had "words" with the pushy woman. This is a diverse area and some of the women can be really cheeky but back off immediately when confronted by men. Then her husband came to the door and was really annoyed with her when he learned she was pestering to rent my drive. "We dont need to rent anyones drive and I will sort the cars" he told her and sent her inside. He apologised profusely and admitted that he would not like an elderly relative to be disturbed after the 9pm deadline. He promised that he would make sure it never happened again.

We are having major works in our village making it necessary to close roads. We just love seeing the cars drive around the 'road closed' signs and having to turn around and come back again. Although it is causing some minor inconvenience there is really no problem, as even delivery drivers can park up and walk to drop off parcels and supermarket deliveries. It has even made people discover that they actually have legs and can walk the few minutes to school, shop, surgery, playpark instead of having to jump in their tanks to drive there. When we go out in the car we make sure to note which road out we need and ensure we come back the same way.

We recently had a 15 day road closure on the only road that leads into town. 10 mile detour. Since then we've had 4way traffic lights and, currently, 3 way traffic lights. No obvious signs of anything actually being done. Just had a letter saying works will be ongoing until 2026 while they put in a new footpath and take another one out... 2026!!

we had this, they over stretched by 3 days, ( a bridge over a stream had collapsed and they decided to resurface the road whilst we were cut off) truthfully, was noisy and dusty for a couple of weeks, but the resulting smooth bit of road is a dream since

We had new gas mains put in all round the neighbourhood during the whole of last . Alternate sides of each road, or whole roads closed for days on end, very noisy and dusty.
The workmen were really helpful and cooperative. The only problem really was that buses only ran on roads with no closures. It made it difficult for those living at the top of the hill, who usually travelled by bus and had limited mobility.

Had it twice quite recently. First was to fix five manhole/drain covers that had been clanging away for 6 months Road closed 4 days. Two months later, potholes done, closed 3 days then single lane for a day. Noise wasn't bad at all and no-one left a vehicle in the road. I was so grateful when the drain covers were done, peace perfect peace.

Months here. They are building a new railway station and a thumping great 650 metre long railway bridge. The roundabout has been removed and roads rerouted. We have to drive around it all, extra kms. I’m getting really sick of it, costing us all heaps but that’s a Labour government for you.

We had a message from the council that they are doing road resurfacing on two of the roads close to where I live. One is immediately outside. They are badly pot holed and the work is needed.

The letter stated that all residents will be asked not to park their cars on the road during the period affected between 7am - 5 pm. I dont have a car and am not expecting any daytime deliveries in the period cited. I have a Tesco delivery but its on a saturday and should not be impacted.

Have any of you had this happen and what was the level of noise and inconvenience? The letter says they anticipate 4 days but I am doubtful about their time scale.

Yes time and time again, sometimes the same road and for weeks on end, definitely not unusual

Our road is undergoing water mains repairs expected to last 7 weeks . Residents have been given letters to prove they live around the area as it gives access to three hamlets . So although in theory we can have access a couple of times (even with a letter ) impossible to go thru with all the heavy machinery across the road . At weekends they open it up on three way traffic lights but last weekend they were all on red !

We have a large hole half way up our road. The road was closed and some work was done on it. A cage was then put round it and road closed signs left at either end of the road. I presume the filling has to settle before it can be finished off. Weeks have passed, the road closed signs have been moved by motorists who now drive over part of the pavement. We can only leave the street one way. We have no idea how long this will go on for.
Between our town and the next a huge part of a road has collapsed, so far about two years have gone by while the fights go on as to who will pay
I hope the noise isn’t too much and they stick to the timetable

We had the bottom half of our road resurfaced earlier this year and the One Car that ignored all the notices was towed and true to the notification it cost £100 to get it back.

It was a bit disruptive for 3 days but it has been worth it. The people who had the work in front of their homes didn't seem to be too badly put out.

If as you say the work needs doing and apart from the noise it doesn’t effect you, buy some earplugs or cheap sound cancelling headphones if you feel the noise will be unbearable

just been reading another post about road closures and how long etc..

so, not a road, ie vehicle carrying road, but here, we have a very popular walkway, access to many homes/roads, etc.. used a lot, and a bridge, a footpath , has been closed for 6 months, (so they say) and this also causes seriousdistruption to everyday life... walking as well as vehicles.. just saying.

Yes Biglouis this woman is a liberty taker, she has been told once and she should not be bothering you again. If you have mobility issues you dont want to keep getting up locking your gates.
Let your nephew go round and speak to her, and tell her not to pester you. If she won't take no for a answer from you let her call the number the nephew gives her.

The route to DGC’s school from our house closes later this month until mid December. Now that is a problem …

Well this is what I am thinking if I gave the woman permission to park on my drive. Its not so simple as her placing it there the night before the workmen begin and removing it four days later when they have gone. We know which roads are affected but not which order they are working on them.

To begin with its not 4 consecutive days but wednedsay - friday of one week and the following monday. So what if it goes on longer? And what if she wants the vehicle in the evenngs when the workmen finish or at the weekend? I have a fence around my garden with locakable gates which is keep locked for privacy and security. I also have mobility issues. So Im not wanting to be up and down opening gates for my unwelcome guest. Im not a car park attendant!

The fact is that everyone on the affected area will be looking to park their vehicle somewhere they can conveniently get at it so spaces on the estate will be at a premium. I can see this causing quite a few rows when people in roads not immediately affected find alien vehicles outside - and possibly cant get their own car out.

Nephew is going to kindly point her to a couple of apps you can use for people who choose to rent out spaces. There may be some within reasonable walking distance. But then, of course, she would have to pay commercial rate which I suspect she does not want to do.

I also took gret exception to her sense of entitlement in saying things like "what a pity that no one is using your drive" as if it were my duty to provide free parking for feckless people. Sometimes you have to be very blunt with these people who are so thick skinned or they will be back asking for another favour.

The road out of our village was closed last July ‘ for seven weeks’…..It is still closed today with no expected date of opening. Many letters/ emails to the local council and local MP, and we are still not sure which of the circulating rumours are true!

My nephew will probably be a lot less threatening than I would. He will simply instruct her not to contact his aunt again without "going through" him. And he will give her a mobile number (if she asks) for an old phone which he never answers.

I did read your previous thread, in fact I recall it from when it was first posted, it doesn’t change my view.

Its not my problem that she has more vehicles than will fit on her property. At the last count it was 4 vehicles so not exactly concerned about the environment. If you want a favour then you dont knock on someone's door after 9 pm!

If you take the trouble to read my previous thread you will see that she has already been refused once. She is disrespecting my boundaries by pestering. A sharper lesson is now required.

So yesterday a near (but not nextdoor) neighbour knocks on my door twice. Once was after the 9pm watershed. Needless to say I ignored her. I was brought up not to disturb people on a sunday unless it was a dire emergency.

This morning I found a note pushed through my door with a phone number asking if I will get back to her. Apparently she does not have room on her property for ALL her vehicles and wants to "store" one of them on my drive during the above cited road closure. She does not want to leave it just anywhere on the estate as it may not be safe.

Some of you may recall a thread from last year when this same woman wanted to use my drive for one of her vehicles. When I pointed out that "renting" my drive would not be a cheap option she backed off. It was clear that she expected me to allow her to park on my drive for free as I have no car.

What a cheek coming around on a sunday to ask again! I was going to ring her but I dont want her to have my number. My nephew is coming around tomorrow with his large and fearsome looking biker mate to do a job. They are going to go over and "have a word". Biker mate looks very intimidating in his black leathers with studs and skulls although he is actually avery nice chap.

The road just outside my house is often used as a turning circle so no wonder its worn away into pot holes. The notice I got was very specific about "removing the existing surface, adjusting the carriageway ironwork (whatever that is) and the laying of a new surface." So I assume they are not just going to fill in the pot holes and then leave it.

Just googled and road ironwork such as manhole covers, road gullies and duct covers need to be bedded with a resilient mortar to prevent the unit rocking or breaking up under traffic loading.

If I was into watching workmen they will be right under two of my cctv cameras for part of the time. What fun.
