Hopelessly out of date?

Exactly Monica. We don’t spend money on exotic holidays now, although we have had a few really wonderful holidays in the past. It’s all about choice and how you wish to spend your hard earned cash.

I do think holidays (especially self catering) have increased in cost since the pandemic. Owners increased their prices to ridiculous amounts and naturally they aren't going to come tumbling back down again.

I'm always amazed to read on Mumsnet the cost of foreign holidays. Posters are paying in the region of £10,000 for a fairly ordinary holiday in Spain, admittedly 2 adults and 2 kids but even so.

Mind you, I'm horribly out of touch as I haven't been on holiday for years due to rescue animal commitments.

I have just paid in excess of £800 for a 3 bed rental, for 3 nights. But it is walking distance of the best beach in England and is in North Norfolk. Maybe I will bump into GSM who lives in the area I believe?

You might find GSM in a caravan down the bottom of her garden having let the house to you for £800! 🤣🤣

Embrace the great outdoors nearer to home for a fraction - stick a pop-up tent or two at the end of the back garden and activate the explorer/pioneer facet of your soul!

Generally speaking you get what you pay for. One lodge may cost £500 for three nights - out of school terms, with fairly simple facilities both in the lodge and on site. Another with superb views in the school holidays with hot tubs and other facilities and a spa on site, with all sorts of extras including a high quality restaurant will charge much more.

I have booked 4 adults to Ibiza in June from our local airport which you always pay much more for. All inclusive hotel, 7 nights, flights, transfers, baggage and in a quiet part of Ibiza where we have stayed before. £650 per person. 🙂

I think in general, you only get what you pay for. Unfortunately young families are limited to school holidays and are at the mercy of tour operators. It’s a question of demand and supply, but at a price.
For the rest of us - you pay your money and take your choice.

It sounds a bit pricey to me. I am paying that kind of money for 7 nights in Daymer Bay next week. The lodge style property (3 beds), not on a site, doesn't have a hot tub, but it has a sun deck, a heated outside shower to rinse off sea water and it accepts dogs!

Daymer Bay is a very smart area, I know it well. You’ve done very well to get somewhere in DB for around £1.000 for one week. We would be charging double that for our house at ‘The Point’ if we still had it, dogs always welcomed and it slept 8 people comfortably. Sold it four years ago but will be looking for somewhere to stay in that area for a week soon. Enjoy your holiday.

Thank you Nightsky2. Is The Point going towards Polzeath? We normally rent a house in Rock, but it is having building works done at the moment. John Bray or Latitudes are both helpful in finding places (occasionally with deals at this time of year). We walk for miles on the beach.

Thank you for the photos. St Enodoch is the church?? We stayed in a house above the little bay beside Polzeath. Four adults four children years ago. No idea what it cost. It was probably an Edwardian house and quite plain. But we loved it and the surfing. Sandy shoes by the back door and cozzies hung up on the line. Not a cocktail in sight. That's my dream of a holiday.

An interesting idea but a back yard probably won't cut it.

I think you have to be organised and have the right gear for camping. I'd need to be elevated from the floor for starters or it would trigger memories of literally floating away on an air bed in Derbyshire!

In the absence of an 8 bedroom property to sell, I'll stick with Air B and B...more or less 100 per night.

This does seem to be the general consensus on Mumsnet but I suppose I haven't factored in school holidays when prices are at a premium. Perhaps they are also counting spending money for theme parks and the like.

Yes it is ‘The Point at Polzeath’. We used to walk for miles and miles when we had the dogs🥲. Polzeath to Daymer Bay to Rock and across to Padstow and down that side. The best pasties from The Chough Bakery Padstow to be taken up onto the headland and shared with the dogs.
The Point have a few lovely apartments for rental with lovely views and with loads of open spaces for dogs. We’ve stayed in one. You can always haggle of course!. You have the use of the swimming pool and there’s tennis, gym, bar and a restaurant and golf of course.
Our son was down there last week and he said it was all very quiet. I’m sure you’ll have a great holiday. It’s just not the same without the dogs. We had them for over 20 years, Archie died 15 months ago and we haven’t been down for over 3 years. We were all getting too old for the hills!. Have a lovely time.

We paid that two years ago for six people: four adults and one child (youngest was under two so no charge for him).
We went to Greece in August for two weeks all-inclusive, so I knew it would be expensive. It was a special birthday treat.
We had the best time and we all enjoyed it. Part way through my granddaughter was saying, "Of course we could always come here again..."
Tell mummy and daddy to start saving!! 😂

I understand there are bargains to be had as bookings in the UK are down on previous years. We have booked a lovely, spacious cottage in Pembrokeshire for £488 for 7 nights through a Welsh holiday company. It’s not in school holidays, btw.

What lovely dogs Nightsky2, you must miss them terribly, but if you return to Daymer Bay they will be with you in spirit, nibbling those yummy pasties!

My DS and family went on a break to a Lodge on a well know UK holiday 'park' just recently. I'm sure that the price you mention is what they paid then had to pay extra for most of the activities. Luckily DS FiL paid for the activities.
