The magnitude of difference between billion and million can be illustrated with this example of the time scale:
A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years.
That's really interesting, and worth memorising as so many figures are bandied about (govt spending and such), without most of us having a real grasp of the enormity of what a billion is.

Keeping these useless facts travel related... I'm planning a trip to Barcelona in September. Did you know that the design for the Eiffel Tower was submitted to Barcelona for the exposition in 1888. It was rejected as being too garish, and instead was re-pitched for the Paris 1889 World Fair and accepted.
