Were you aware animal testing of cosmetics is now permitted for many cosmetic ingredients?

I've heard that any cosmetics that are marketed in China have to be tested on animals so certain manufacturers do animal testing so they can sell there. I think Max Factor do. I always used their mascara till I found out. The simplest thing is to search for companies that don't do animal testing and boycott the others.

That’s true, some Companies insist that they don’t test on animals, then in small writing admit that to sell in China some products have to be tested on animals, but they don’t tell you which ones.
Hypocrites.

I still use the old company Beauty without Cruelty which I found locally in H&B and Boots.

I think there is a certain nuance, at least there is here in Europe - maybe different for you in the UK since Brexit. I like Yves Rocher, the French brand of care products and cosmetics. They themselves do nót test on animals, but their products are re-tested before coming on the market in China, and the Chinese test on animals. Now excuse me, but who can help what the Chinese do?

The companies choose to sell their products in China and they pay for the tests that are conducted there. In other words, they put profits before ethics and are therefore as guilty as any other company that openly carries out animal testing.

Moi aussi. I used to like Yves Rocher but you haven’t been able to get it in the UK for a while. I also like a particular Max Factor lipstick. I am going to have to find another from a proper cruelty free brand. All of these companies are complicit as well as hypocritical. When I started this post I had no idea of how shocked I would be.

I don’t trust the Chinese with their animal testing. It’s sure to be with cruelty. My neighbour has a dog rescued from China where it was kept in a small cage and tormented to make better tasting meat for eating. It’s taken some time for this beautiful dog to settle but it’s no surprise to learn she doesn’t like Chinese people even though not all are cruel.

Oh dear. I'd always thought Occitane was a good French company.

What we buy here is not tested on animals but China insisted on products being sold there being tested on animals and unfortunately l'Occitane caved in to pressure.

I had no idea that animal testing was still frequent and by so many brands including those that I use .
I'll be more careful in future .

I do wonder how many ‘cruelty free’ brands surreptitiously use ingredients that have been tested on animals somewhere down the line, in their goods

If makeup, moisturisers, cleansers, shower gel, household cleaning products etc do not have the leaping bunny then I won’t buy it. I do feel cross when I see people buying those without it as there’s plenty of info out there now. Those animals suffer terribly, including tests on pregnant and new born animals. It’s horrific. If people stopped buying them then it would pressurise companies into stop selling in China. With regard to Boots I’m pretty sure they don’t have leaping bunnies. I use Superdrug own brand. M and S, Co Op and Sainsbury’s own brands are cruelty free also. The likes of Persil, Fairy Liquid, Max Factor etc all test. It’s a disgrace.

Unfortunately too many people just can’t be bothered, and never will be. That’s a disgrace. They must buy their favourite brand (especially a high end one they can boast about) despite all the information about the suffering which lies behind it.

I didn't know this still went on on such a scale, although I was aware that any company which sold its products to China had to test on animals. China has many fine points, I am sure, but animal welfare is not one of them. Since reading about angora wool production in China (horrific), I have always checked all woollen items for their country of origin. My go to moisturiser has always been Clinique, so when this current bottle is finished, it won't be replaced. I am gutted about L'Occitane, my go to luxury shower gel.

Just checked, and it seems that my other go to treat Molton Brown is cruelty free. Will amend my Xmas wish list.

Thanks NannyCI for the information. I have just bought a large tub of Nivea from Tesco Click and Collect and will now return to Tesco website and delete the Nivea. Being a friend to animals is a right nuisance but we have to do it.

I’m horrified at how widespread this cruelty is and I’m very grateful to those who have posted with this information. I will now revise my makeup as other products have the rabbit already. I’m disgusted tbh.

Have you not noticed how many men wear cosmetics now? (I’m talking real men, not those pretending to be something else.)
I don’t get how you feel making yourself feel good or look good to yourself and probably others, by washing, hairstyles, clothing, and even make up, is to do with equality for women.
Unless you choose to go out unwashed, ungroomed, and looking scruffy because some men do.
