'Coronate, meaning' 'to crown'. is a very old word in use from 15/16C. It's fallen by the wayside, apart from in botany, but is a genuine word, not made up.
And guess why Americans use it? Because American English is closer to 16th century English then current day Queens English.
Previous posters sneered because they saw the word in an American newspaper while in America.
I do not care what word is used the Ireland, Scotland and Australia. The post was talking about, and judging a word used IN the US.
