Hand washing dishes.

I use a dishwasher mostly daily, but like others on here, when hand washing at DD’s last week it was glasses, cups, cutlery, plates then pans/bakeware (which had been soaking in hot soapy water). Water regressed/ replaced as necessary. My Nan was a very good teacher for that, and even better, she thought my DBs should learn too!

I have to rinse everything in hot water. And I put all cutlery in the cutlery drainer handle side down except for sharp knives. When I do use the dishwasher, which isn’t very often, I rinse everything first. I can’t bear to see plates etc sitting there with bits of food on them. I’m beyond help, I think.

I was just going to say Iam64 seeing as we are in agreement of the order of washing wasn’t this what we learnt in domestic science? Sadly long gone from the curriculum but we were taught the basics.

I’m now living alone, i use the dishwasher usually once a day. I fill it as the day goes be, then do a short wash.

I was trained in 1A by Miss Parkin, the domestic science teacher to wash glasses, cutlery, plates then pans. I was 11 it was 1951, she was a powerful woman so I’ve always followed her advice. In fact I’ve just done so. Family been endless pots, dishwasher full so sink needed. I suspect Miss Parkin would disapprove of fish washers

According to the Fairy liquid advert you can use cold water if you buy their new washing up liquid. I wonder how germ free their ‘clean’ dishes are.

Plenty of hot water, glasses and cleanish stuff before greasy items.

Never had a dishwasher, and really don’t want one.

Hate helping washing up at community events and seeing others trying to clean stuff in a couple of inches of lukewarm water, so unhygienic.

We don't have a dishwasher so I wash glasses, China, pots and pans and really greasy things last that usually have had a bit of washing up liquid and hot water put in them already to help shift the grease. The hot water is changed as necessary.

Mr B does all ours, no idea of his method but it all seems fine. I just keep him topped up with Fairy liquid (his preference), and wash the dish cloths etc on an almost daily basis.

kircubbin2000, I'd just be glad that somebody did the washing up. Of, course, that's not the way I'd do it - but I'd say not a word. Later, when alone, I'd inspect and maybe re-do/rinse a few things!

Change the water regularly, or keep topping it up with hot water, to keep the water really hot and then wash items in the order OP lists.

Same here Ashcombe I like to rinse the soap off as well but trying to save water as well, have to be less fussy.

I don't have a dishwasher either as I live alone and would take an age to fill one. I do my glasses, then china and then pots and pans. Greasy things are left until the end and I normally have had soaking from the start on the worktop. I know my sister and I will have a row tomorrow over dish washing, it always happens.

I can appreciate your frustration!! Hot soapy water is essential. I wash glasses first, followed by cutlery then crockery, ensuring the least soiled items are washed ahead of greasy ones.

Finally, the pans, with anything really greasy being left until last. Although I have a dishwasher, there are almost always some things to wash by hand.
