Do you lock your doors in daytime ?

We were victims of a dreadful break in, thankfully we were out.
We have always locked all doors day and night, burglar alarm and CCTV!
I have also had a knife held to my throat and threatened by a complete nut job, this wasn’t in our home but security is paramount for me.
I have a real fear of who is walking behind me, even in daylight.
I would say to all of you please be more security conscious, I am genuinely shocked at the relaxed attitude of so many.
Even sleepy little villages have their horror stories.

Mine are not locked. If I go out I lock the front door behind me. And hope that I have remembered to lock the back door, which is open all day.

True, GG13, but first they have to work out who you are and where it is that you live, which depends on how much information you divulge. It's probably easier for the burglars to just take a chance on a door being open.

Yes I lock all doors during the day. I never used to but two experiences made me change my mind.
The first was when I was out in the garden with my then small children. The garden is large, over a third of an acre and we were apple picking. I took the children back to the house for a drink and found a woman standing in my hallway. I knew her slightly as her daughter was friends with mine.
She was very drunk and asked to use my phone (landline.)
I let her make a call then Sent her on her way.
I always tried to remember to lock the doors after that but did let it slip after a while until incident number 2.

One of our local GPS developed Alzheimers at the age of 49 and had to retire. In the early stages he would wander through the town attempting to make house calls (he lived locally) and and on one occasion he just walked into my house demanding to use the toilet.
Fortunately, I wasn't alone. I let him use the bathroom and we eventually persuaded him to leave but he was quite aggressive.

My house is like Fort Knox now.

Yes the doors are locked if I'm in on my own.
Moved house about 15 years ago and I never locked those doors.
2 weeks after moving someone came into the old house and raped the new owner.

No, only when I am in by myself for a few days.Not usually where we live now only when it is the Appelby Horse fair lots of Farms are given the once over and an air B&B completely cleared out of everything not screwed down.
Where we used to live on the commuter belt for a large City in the East Riding all the time front and back and all windows. Unfortunately, it was not enough and I came home from work to find the house completely ransacked. They had crowbarred the old-fashioned french windows. My next-door neighbour was in at the time and saw a van backing into the drive and thought I had arranged workmen not that I ever did when at work[her excuse for keeping out of it which I don't blame her}. They even had the cheek to use my duvet cover to put all the jewellery and cameras in to take their stash away.

The front door is always locked. If I’m in the kitchen I will leave the back door unlocked or open a little for the dog to wander in and out but if I go upstairs or into the lounge to watch tv I lock it. Like Septimia I always lock it before I start hoovering anyone could walk in and you just wouldn't hear them.

We always lock our front and side door even when we are in which drives the kids nuts but you just never know with opportunists around.

Front door unlocked all day as it's the one we use all the time. We lock it in the evening. Don't use the back door as most of the garden is at the front. When we lived in a town, the front door was locked but not the back.

In both cases, doors locked when hoovering or if taking a daytime shower - if I'm on my own.

I like to leave our doors wide open , hoping that one day a deer ? will come in!
I have thought about leaving an ‘E.T.’ type trail of food to entice them ?

Front, always locked, its close to the pavement: quiet street, quiet area, but quiet enough for someone to slip in if it were open!

Got very high side security gates

which means back door is open when I'm around the house or garden or garage but closed if I'm having a doze upstairs.

No alarm fitted, we haven't mentioned this yet, about 30% houses have them fitted locally but crime actually very very low and no noted crimes against people.

Front door and side gate always locked. Back door locked if I go out and at night but the key taken out because if anything happened to me DD would not be able to rescue Peggy if the key is left in the keyhole.

Family know the combination for the garden gate.

Front, yes locked.

Back, yes locked.

Side, yes locked, however people making deliveries can access.

Front door here is always locked and the chain goes on at night. Back doors are usually unlocked during the day but open onto enclosed garden - we are usually in and out.

It's not the 'stuff' that I worry about but the possibility of the house being vandalised or someone in it being hurt.

Our front door has a Yale lock, so unless I want to keep it open (eg to air the house or if I'm expecting a visitor) it locks itself. My husband likes to leave the back door open, as he's in and out to the garden, the garage and so on, but when he goes out he knows I like it locked, as I am usually in the front of the house (our house is 'long and thin') and I wouldn't hear anyone coming in the back door which is two rooms away from where I usually sit.

Yes if I am in on my own. No if there are others in the house as well.

I went for a walk with a friend who had left her upstairs bathroom window open. We passed 2 young boys on bikes and when we came back all her jewellery and cash had gone.
I think where I live is safe as no one ever walks up here yet a few things are missing from my garage which has a broken door.

No never lock doors until bedtime wouldn't even think about doing so.
The only time I might is if I was out the back gardening and DH was not at home.
Admittedly DH is 6'4 and built like a rugby scrum half so not much would get past him.
Best burglar deterant is a big dog which we no longer sadly have they might get in but unlikely to have got out
