It's very useful in a flat (my son has one at his flat in London), and maybe in some houses, just not mine. I suppose, though, that in totting up the square footage and price per sq ft it might be useful when we sell, plus looks good on the photos if, like the last owners, we put a little table and two chairs on it for show (they would blow over in the wind here).

I always fancied having a balcony but you've both put me off ?

We have a balcony off our bedroom. Handy for shouting to the milkman but not much else .

We have a balcony leading off our (raised, four steps up) living room. Another four steps up to the balcony. We have never used it. If we want to go outside we go outside. Looks good but totally pointless.

Our daughters bedrooms. We had a builder modify those rooms with wall beds, they can still sleep over for holidays, removed most of their bedroom furnishings. Now we each have an office and each have a sitting reading room separate to the rest of the house. Brilliant, really.

I'm sorting out the cupboard under the stairs.
It's not used that often, except to grab a raincoat, but there is so much stuff in there, some of which we'd forgotten about.

Now, do I put it all back again but more tidily?

bb2013, I agree. It's been decades since I had a bath as I prefer a quick shower. I once tried to do the, you know, candles and wine thing but got bored waiting for the bath to fill and pulled the plug. I prefer a quick 5 min. shower, or 10 min. if I'm washing my hair. Job done!

The gas man cometh a few weeks ago to service the boiler and gas fire. He told us the company had received many phone calls from people asking how to reduce consumption. In his opinion our gas fire will be of great benefit to us this winter should we choose to heat only one room. Until now we’ve hardly ever used the fire…

Dining room with vaulted ceiling. Always cold and who uses dining rooms nowadays?

I’ve already downsized so 3 small bedrooms, one for us, one for my sewing etc stuff and one small bedroom for anyone staying over. Thing is the sewing room is tiny and so is the spare room. If family come they stay round the corner in the travel lodge, any local grandchildren prefer their own beds and us going there to babysit.
So both rooms are too small, I can’t evidently whether to knock through or not.

Keeping my bath as long as possible, I live soaking my mildly arthritic knees in it.

Very lovely but tiny back garden but ridiculously large shed!

We keep nothing in the loft after so many house moves where we found out there was almost as much in the loft than in the house itself! Now it's just stacked with insulation.
Our upstairs balcony - can't imagine using it. Pointless feature.
Our summer house - underused, but was great during Covid.
Our baths - good to have when there is a back ache needing soothed, otherwise showers are our favourite.

Couldn't live without my dishwasher (or dryer in winter)

I would have said the stair lift that we had fitted when my mother-in-law was alive.
However, when my daughter came to stay after breaking all bones in her ankle, it was a godsend.

I got rid of the tumble dryer years ago and use a rotary dryer instead. Clothes last much longer. Using the dishwasher comes cheaper than washing by hand (Google it) and with 2 of us, gets run every other day. It's a Bosch and uses very little water. When my husband became ill, we converted the breakfast room, with large windows overlooking the south facing garden, to a downstairs bedroom and were very glad we included a low threshold shower in the adjacent bathroom.

We have a large deck off the side of our house, but because our house it quite high there is almost always a breeze. I am grateful to have the deck, but the back or front garden get used more, depending on where the sun is. We have a table and 4 chairs set up, but have only had dinner outside once this summer. It would be nice to update the metal railing for a glass, but they are quite expensive.

As a side note, we live near the ocean and there seems always to be a cool breeze, even in summer, so we gravitate towards warmer less-windy spots.

Back yard (standard up north). I'm a Southerner and wish it was a garden. Use the front garden instead.

Gas fire/fireplace. Haven't used it. Ever. Would love to have it taken out.

Loft. Really need to get a new lift ladder fitted so I can use it.

I have a nearly new dishwasher that came to me when my sister died suddenly in 2012. It's been sitting unused in my back hall since then. I live alone and don't need a dishwasher.

When I had the kitchen on my narrow boat home ripped out and new one put in I had a tumble dryer installed. In the 3 years I have hardly used it. I dry clothes on the old fashioned airer hanging near multifuel burner or outside on rotary line. I should have had another cupboard or another set of pan drawers put in the space...

I was horrified to recently find myself looking up those baths with little doors in the side

Not recommended unless you have a very warm bathroom and a good book to read while the bath is filling and emptying
