I think Anne would make a superb regent if ever the need arises, but would she want the job?
Harry isn’t even eligible if he lives abroad, but I think he’d be terrible at it. That’s the problem with a hereditary system. People like Andrew and Harry with potential claims to power.

Prince Harry’s speech
(458 Posts) Couldn’t resist
What do you all make of Prince Harry’s latest venture into the world of public speaking?
I was thinking more along the lines of being Regent, not succeeding to the throne.
Anne is 17th in line to the throne, after her brothers and their children! There are two babies before her.

I don't think the position of Regent is automatic (see Richard 111!). The Hanoverians had some mishaps, with someone being dispatched by a cricket ball (Fred?) and there was the undignified race to produce an heir after the death of Princess Charlotte, Victoria being the first to arrive. George V1, talk of one of his brothers taking his place following the Duke of Windsor's departure. I have no doubt there are measures in place about Harry.
But what about Princess Anne?
Why are we paying for his privately brought claim? I understand we have to pay for our defence, but pay for him to make the claim? It’s no wonder he feels entitled!
Do you the state would pay for my claim if I brought a case against them? No? Thought not!
Precisely Smileless (to your last paragraph). Column inches count in his new world.
Plus, if he were to get security paid for here, any country he visited is obliged to pay for his security as well.
As I understand it, we are paying for his court case anyway (could be wrong).
So it's a win win for him.
This thread, with all its speculation about accidents and next-in-line, is starting to sound like ‘Kind Hearts And Coronets’!
As the eldest child of the second in line to the throne, George is entitled to protection, Harry is not and he's not allowed to pay privately for police protection; no one is.
Harry knows this so perhaps it's just a way to keep himself 'relevant' and in the news.
If Harry and his family are not eligible the next in line is Andrew! That would definitely be the end of the monarchy. Unless he stepped down, then it would be Queen Beatrice.
The Regency Act of 1937 states that the Regent has to be resident in the United Kingdom - has Harry foregone his right to be Regent by moving to the States?
Could they bypass him?
Who's next?
Oh no!
Harry and Megan at the State opening of Parliament !
Many a time when we all flew as a family I said a prayer prior to take off. Not that I was ever going to be Queen, but there was a nasty SiL next in line to inherit everything!! DH took the attitude that he didn't care because he would never be around to see the disaster she made. Maybe that's how William feels?!
I do wish William would not travel with his children, especially in helicopters. If a dreadful accident occurred then Harry would be next in line, the ravens would leave the Tower of London and the country would fall.
I actually thought that initially Meghan and Harry showed a lot of promise and looked very happy in their new rôles. Lots of enthusiasm and wanting to co-operate with other members of the royal family. Difficult to put a finger on when things changed and why.
Harry might be regent if George (or Charlotte or Louis) became monarch while still a minor, but that is only a future possibility.
However, he is not regent at this moment, he is just a non-working member of the royal family who is not representing the Queen at an event, and as such he is not entitled to official police protection, any more than any other member who is not representing the monarch. The police are not a firm of commercial bodyguards, and are not for hire. If Harry were allowed to employ them, it would form a precedent for any other visiting celebrity to ask to buy their services.
That was my thought Calendargirl - she’d not mind being first violin would she?
No way was she going to play second fiddle… I still think Meghan knew she’d missed her chance by not hooking William and then settling for Harry and the hope a sprinkling of Hollywood stardust would mean they could beat the pecking order!
Meghan would probably enjoy being the wife of the Regent.
She might condescend to move back to the UK if that were the case.
?????????
But Harry is next in line after William's children. So theoretically he is still regardless of what any of you may feel about him a potential monarch. If for example something was to happen to Charles and William before George was old enough Harry would be regent
Given that Harry isn't prepared to carry out Royal duties as 6th in line to the throne, what makes you think he'd take on the role of regent if it arose? I refer you to my suggestion in my post of 13.08. I'd have a bit more respect for him if he did, at least that would be honest.
The fact that we provide state funded police protection to a very rich family is all to do with the Queen (or whoever is our monarch at any particular time) being our Head of State. I would like to live in a true democracy and have an elected Head of State, but that’s not how it is. We have to work with the status quo, and so at this point in time, certain royals get full time police protection, and other royals get temporary police protection when engaged in royal duties.
Obviously our Prime Minister gets full time police protection, and I believe all ex Prime Ministers continue to receive protection for the rest of their lives. I don’t know about any other government ministers, I suspect not, but I don’t know.
With regard to Harry becoming a regent if Charles and William died, I believe that is correct as nothing has been changed since Harry abdicated his royal duties and status. Anyway nothing has been changed as far as I am aware, perhaps others know more. I’m not sure that the public would find this acceptable and it could cause more calls for an elected Head of State. I don’t know, I hope it never happens. It’s very unlikely.
Who has demanded more state funded police protection? And got it.
Working royals are the only royals who have state funded police protection. Whether you like it or not!
But Harry is next in line after William's children. So theoretically he is still regardless of what any of you may feel about him a potential monarch. If for example something was to happen to Charles and William before George was old enough Harry would be regent,
I really don't care about any of them. But it amuses me the way lines are drawn- working royals are the only people who have protection (they're not)
You can't but police protection -no but you can demand more at the public expense.
And how secretive the whole matter is.
It just shows how they have managed to make what is in fact a rich family, charging poor people for their protection, acceptable.
As I said upthread, the goalposts will be moved every time because it is indefensible to say one individual can buy police protection but another can't.
Harry has stated he wants no part of the obligations of having been born into the RF, no royal duties or obligation to reside in the UK. Surely he can renounce his title and place in the succession order, remain a loving member of his family and just be the ordinary Joe he claims to want to be. No higher profile than any other celebrity.
Another very simple concept;
Harry cannot buy police protection because police protection is not for sale for individuals.
Simple!
Oh dear, this is getting tedious. Glorianny for the third time today:
The Queen
Prince Charles and Camilla
and
Prince William and his family
are all given 24 hour police protection! What is difficult to understand about that? It’s because they’re senior royals. It’s really not difficult.
Other royals are afforded protection as and when they are engaged in royal duties. In other words, when they are working.
Senior royals, as named above, get 24 hour protection, whether they are working or not working. George is the child of a senior royal and in direct line to the throne. His siblings are also the children of a senior royal and so get 24 hour protection along with their parents.
Do you really find this difficult to understand?
