I managed to avoid all coverage too apart from the bit that was on the news and I thought he looked very old but she is very old, so it is hardly worth commenting on.

My main thought was where do all those people in the mall go to the toilet?

It irritates me that HM refuses to use a wheelchair to attend the church service today which is all about her. What message does that send to wheelchair users everywhere?

But so much work goes into all the celebrations in her honour, then she decides not to come at the last minute. I know it’s her choice but it’s vanity and selfishness isn’t it ?

As we do not know the exact reasons why The Queen did not attend St.Paul’s (nor should we as medical matters are private as far as I am concerned) I cannot agree that it is vanity and selfish

I don't agree it's vanity and selfishness GSM. It's said she's feeling uncomfortable after yesterday so she may not have felt comfortable being seated in a wheelchair.

I should think she's bitterly disappointed at not being able to attend all the celebrations, more upset than anyone else.

I thought that not being able to climb steps even with help and process down the nave would be hard ( unless there is disabled access. I do not recall it. And I agree her medical condition is her private business. I do not believe it is anything to do with vanity or selfishness. Knowing how important her religious faith is to the Queen, I think that service is one she she really wanted to attend. Some of us have great difficulty with mobility. I would really love to walk but cannot go anywhere without a walking stick and help with someone supporting me and I am 8 years younger than her Majesty.

At the time of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897, and as a nod to her increasing frailty, she was taken to St Paul's in her carriage and stayed in it while the dignitaries came out to her - so the service was conducted outside. I'm not sure how well this would have gone down today though, particularly if it had rained!

I think, from what I've read, she was conscious of how frail and ill her sister looked when she was in a wheelchair. She is possibly afraid of that. But obviously I have no idea.
I do know that doing "big" events is more exhausting as we age.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said the Queen “greatly enjoyed” her birthday parade and flypast in London but “did experience some discomfort”.

That's so vague that it's impossible to know what the problem is.

She appeared to be relaxed and looked like she was enjoying the show, but who knows?

I don't. Maybe she's mildly 'discomforted', or maybe she feels quite unwell.

But I think it's probably time for her to hand-over to Charles when the Jubilee is done.

On Wednesday my friend and I did a recce of The Mall as we like to do 'topical' walks... weddings, funerals, joobs, elections! I posted some pics on the photography thread.

As with all big events, there were rows & rows of portaloos tucked away out of camera sight in St James's Park!

I agree Dickens. I think this not turning up at the last minute has gone on for long enough. It’s time for Charles to take over properly. He’s doing the job in all but name and continuing to cling on and deny him the job he’s waited for all his life is nothing short of selfish.

I agree with you too Dickens and GSHM. I think she is desperately hanging on for this jubilee and then who knows what happens. I feel sorry for Charles, he looks feebler than his mum. He had a long day in the saddle yesterday and it was hot under that bearskin I bet. He is 73 now and not a young man so I wonder what happens if the Queen stays on and Charles becomes incapacitated too. Why oh why can’t we have a younger more with it monarchy like the Dutch?

I am amazed that Germanshepherdsmum has said this, i hope you never suffer from terrible mobility problems that would even stop you being able to sit in a wheelchair due to pain, your comment is horrible and so lacking in compassion ,its unbelievable you wrote it, my husband has suffered for many many years and he would not be able to sit in a wheelchair for long as it would just increase the pain ,
