Today is the Grand National, as I am more Irish than English horse racing is in my blood, I love this race.
I only bet twice a year once on the Grand National and then Listowel races in September..
Are any of you having a punt?

Any Second Now and Snow Leopardess are two of my choice.

BlueBelle I meant threads in general. I agree that nobody should condone cruelty of any kind. I would prefer that horse racing didn't happen as well as other "sports" involving animals. They are being exploited to make some people rich.

I don’t agree AGA we should not all have different viewpoints on cruelty to animals or people We should all agree totally on that subject no wriggle room whatsoever

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 09-Apr-22 14:32:41

It does.

AGAA4 Sat 09-Apr-22 14:26:13

That sounds so sad ?

Witzend Sat 09-Apr-22 14:22:54

Who else is familiar with Pam Ayres’ poem about a racehorse writing his will before a race? And (IIRC) leaving his packet of Polos to his stablemate.?

AGAA4 Sat 09-Apr-22 14:14:47

I have found this thread interesting apart from unnecessary nasty comments. We all have different views on the subjects discussed and that is how it should be.

No betting for me and certainly couldn’t bear to watch the race.

I think we're all like Marmite Urmstongran You are just more forthright when starting conversations and less cautious about expressing your views that some. That's why you are a big part of why Gransnet is the entertaining and thought provoking place it is.

I like Marmite.

I like marmite too?
I won't be betting cos I never do but went to thursdays race day with my DP as 10000 tickets were given to local merseyside NHS Trusts ....so it was a nice day out freebie .
Each to their own though

..

greenlady102 Sat 09-Apr-22 12:13:27

www.horsedeathwatch.com These dead horses are only the race related injuries, not injuries in training or what happens to horses when they can no longer race or if they don't make the grade

No, never have and never will. It's cruel and IMO should be banned.

Completely agree. It’s cruel and horrific. Should be banned!

nightowl Sat 09-Apr-22 12:04:48

I have to disagree GrannyGravy. I too have been around horses all my life, and it is perfectly possible and all too common that horses are made to do things they really don’t want to do. To think otherwise is to truly misunderstand how willing to please these wonderful creatures are. That is why they have been used and abused by humans since time immemorial.

nightowl Sat 09-Apr-22 12:02:07

Only a matter of time before the sweepstake got started. Enjoy ladies, but have you forgotten how sad you felt after a horse (or was it two?) died in last year’s race. Why not bet on who will get the dead one? God preserve horses from animal lovers.

Yes please Fanny.

Jaxjacky Sat 09-Apr-22 11:58:54

You might not have lost the ‘argument’ which I obviously missed Jody, but you’ve lost a hell of a lot of respect from fellow posters who don’t need to be unkind.

Yes Urmstongran I’ve got a couple of bets on and one for each member of my family, 25p e/w, I know my limits! If I didn’t have covid I’d be in our local pub watching it too, cheers ?.

FannyCornforth Sat 09-Apr-22 11:46:05

⁉️Is anyone interested in taking part in the GN Grand National Sweepstake?

I really enjoyed organising it last year - but I don’t want to invite any abuse!
I really can’t be doing with it!

Yay or nay (neigh)?
