Everyone has a right to defence

Defending a nasty defendant may be dirty work but at the very least, for the sake of the justice system, someone has to do it.

I understand that we should presume someone innocent until proven guilty

But

When it comes to allegations of abuse I think we should presume its the truth until proven otherwise

Statistically the 2nd of those statements is correct more often

Alegrias1 I deliberately avoided this thread for a while because I really couldn't believe some of what I was reading, but alas, curiosity got the better of me and I popped back on today. Wish I hadn't now after reading the latest comments. I was always taught never to look down on people unless you were giving them a hand up. Some on here must find it hard to breathe up in the rarefied atmosphere of their moral high ground.

Been gone a couple of days and the forum's turned into the Judge Dredd movie.

Once, I've been on a jury. At first glance, given the defendant's background and where he lived, it was obvious he was probably guilty. We found him Not Guilty, and didn't ruin his life. And some poor downtrodden lawyer person (I'm being sarcastic) had got out of his nice warm bed to make sure justice was served. More fool him eh?

Wow, just wow. That's a rather bigoted view. It doesn't become any of us to look down on other people.

Commercial work wwm, and private client work for high net worth clients. No criminal or family work.

There are firms willing to do that sort of work Lucca. But not the sort I was with. Would you like to work for people charged with violent crime or paedophilia for instance, for less than MacDonalds would pay you? Because that’s the reality of Legal Aid. If you’re the Duty Solicitor called in the early hours you have to go to the police station regardless of who might need advice and what they might try on with you when you’re on your own with them.

I'd add that not all those accused of crimes are guilty.

I too was surprised by the comment made by GSM regarding criminal lawyers. Rather snobby and in bad taste.

So she's going to make some money Annie why is that so wrong? Do you realise that no-one really knows how Epstein made all his money? It's high;ly likely that some of it was made through providing the services of girls like Giuffre to very rich and powerful men and yet you would begrudge her film and book rights to her own life?

It's not going to be a very interesting book or film unless she names some of her other clients, is it? If she tries to name other people she might lose some of her vast bank balance in defamation actions.

I read this as referring to enticing women into prostitution then witholding the money they have been promised so they cannot escape. VG, according to this post, was paid for her services.
And once again, if it was so distasteful to her, why did she perform these services twice more, plus of course, for all the other men she is not at present pursuing?
Because it was her choice.

I think your posts lacks understanding of what I have been saying in my posts. Have you seen me criticise the Rochdale girls for instance? I have in fact drawn a distinction between their experiences and those of VG.
No, I am pleased to say that my work didn't involve anything of the sort. I left that to solicitors who wanted to live just above the breadline doing criminal defence work and mixing with criminals and their ilk. Not something any firm I worked with touched.
