Petition for poor little Arthur

I certainly consider 29 years very lengthy; I just think it's nowhere near lengthy enough for someone who systematically tortured a child to death.

I'm not disagreeing with that.

However I think people might want to consider what a long time 29 years is. And they might want to consider that hoping people get injured or worse in prison is just revenge, and our legal system isn't about revenge.

Don’t they just. Getting prissy about ethics and appropriateness is typical and an example of the mindset of those that would rather have 20 case conferences whilst kids are going through hell.

I signed it yesterday and chipped in a fiver to enable it to have a further reach. Public opinion is the reason Boris has ordered an inquiry. Nothing to do with lynching anyone. Hindley and Brady were kept in because of public opinion.

I think the judiciary are well aware of public opinion, as are the government who are launching an inquiry. The Attorney General is asking for the sentencing to be reviewed. A petition cannot achieve more.

I agree wholeheartedly with GSM and Beswitched about the ethics and appropriateness of this petition.

The judiciary have rules about how to apply sentences I believe - I'm sure that GSM for one knows better than me. They don't need their backbones stiffened.

Germanshephardsmum, I really cannot believe that you think signing this petition is akin to ‘mob rule’. I’m astonished. Surely the petition is a way to make politicians and Judges know that the public is horrified at the violence done to a small helpless child and that we would like the sentence to be the harshest possible. I cannot do anything to help Arthur and cannot erase his considerable suffering, but I can make sure that my voice is heard in a tiny way.
What is the harm in signing the petition? The sentence won’t be decided by mob rule, I know we have no chance to decide the sentence but it might give the judiciary some idea of how the public feel and it might stiffen their backbones a little in their decision to increase the sentence or not.

New legislation was passed here in Ireland a few years ago, that changed the balance of rights between parents and children in order to ensure the child's rights and welfare come first.

That might be a more fitting way to remember and honour the life of Arthur. By looking at and reviewing the whole issue of a parent's automatic right to guardianship or contact with their child, nó matter how detrimental to the child.

I agree that whole life sentences would be appropriate, however I don’t agree with these things being decided by a public petition, which is one step removed from a lynch mob, so won’t be signing it. Thankfully steps are being taken to ask for the sentences to be reviewed anyway. And I hope the desired result is achieved.

Totally agree, and they are already looking at making the sentences longer. Non of those services involved ever learn though, do they.? Going back many many years, the same things happen. Surely better to disrupt family life, than to have murdered abused children on your conscience.

I think they deserve long long sentences for their terrible crime.

But I don't think individual sentences should be decided by public petition. A petition to ask for a change in minimum sentencing for those found both sane and guilty of child abuse and neglect would be better.

I believe she is having salt thrown at her, which is about what she deserves, I don't believe the other prisoners will be too friendly to them

Even life in prison is too good for the likes of them.

Their sentences are already under review.

I think the two concerned should definitely receive whole life sentences bluebellwould. However, I would like to add that unlike humans, animals including pigs, do not generally behave in this vile way towards their young.
