Unbearable noises!

Funnily only yesterday I thought about all the screaming and shouting children seem to do when playing outside. When AC were young we lived on a new estate that had loads of kids (primary school built to cope) but I cannot recall kids making as much noise as they do in gardens nowadays. As young as they were my lot didn't want to play near parents as they didn't want to be observed as to what they were doing or saying so went off to park and woods. I do feel that children are subjected to so much noise in homes eg loud music, headphones for computer games, ear buds for listening to phones that they have hearing issues and think noise is normal.

Throat clearing, I detest it. A guy I know does it all the time, it's disgusting. My friend & I were actually having a conversation about it last night. The guy is landscaping my back garden this week and I had to close my windows because I was getting so agitated listening to him.

Any noise I find hard to tolerate, I love the sound of silence or just water or birdsong. I’ve even moved because in my back garden all I could hear from one neighbour was the radio all day every day in the garden with her, only days it wasn’t too bad was when it rained hard then her husband had it in the garage with the door open in our direction. The couple the other side had a daughter with loud youngsters who were constantly in their hot tub in the garden screaming and shouting, (even though they weren’t supposed to be at her parents, at the back of us he played drums and in the good weather all lockdown especially with bi fold doors open. next door to them they built a golf pitch and put in the garden with floodlights that shone into our patio lounge doors and to top the lot opposite us had a small bungalow with a large swimming pool in the garden for their screaming grandchildren! I’m hoping for some peace and quiet this summer in our new garden but watch this space!

Background noise of any sort. I like silence. Also people swallowing. Love the thread and agree with quite a few but the above two are what really upset me.

sorry if i offend but i cant stand dogs barking, it just really grates on me

Many of the noises already mentioned but especially wind chimes because it starts my tinnitus off. I think I may well sneak into my neighbour’s garden this summer in the dead of night and ‘make the wind chimes disappear’.

I love music but not at the level it’s played in shops especially in Superdrug and sports shops. The young shop assistants like load thumping music, but it gives me a headache and I end up leaving the shop and not buying anything. Often wondered if it’s for the staff’s benefit rather than the customer’s?

I used to find my ex H's chewing sounds irritating however my DS lost his temper over my DD's chewing once and ended up throwing his plate of food at the wall! Personally I couldn't hear what it was that bothered him. I only heard it was a recognised problem after that incident. Apparently it is quite a common problem. I know someone who can't eat her lunch in the office when a certain colleague is present as she finds their particular chewing noise unbearable.

I agree with those who mentioned children screaming all the time.They do it on the bus too,and parents don't tell them to stop.I'm sure children didn't always scream all the time,Mine never did,my granddaughter didn't either

Yapping dogs for sure. People who break wind noisily and some times deliberately so. Disgusting.

I don't like loud music in places that are not discos. I was in Asda this morning and the music was so loud, even without my hearing aids in, that is confused me and i found it difficult to shop. I don't like it at the health club either, David Lloyd, whne open. I do not see why we need loud music to change and shower to! If people want music they can have headphones and an ipod but if it is loudly played I can't avoid it.

My daughter suffers from anxiety about noises. She can't bear people breathing near her or various other noises. It caused quite a lot of conflict when she was younger because she would be moaning about things which we could barely hear and it would always seem like she was being unfair to her younger siblings. We didn't understand that this was a very real problem to her and she felt very misunderstood. It is only now we are enlightened about this (and her other sensory processing disorders) that we are able to reflect on how difficult it is for her.

My MIL used an ill fitting set of dentures, she didn’t ‘get on’ with her new ones, which were only used for best!
When she ate it sounded like castanets - it used to make me shudder!

Noisy eaters, especially eating with the mouth open.
Noisy breathers, my DH says he doesn't snore, but accepts he will probably be a noisy breather.

At the moment he has a vile, noisy, cough (which has gone on since long before Covid was invented) and when he sneezes - it's just as well I'm deaf!!

Those high pitched squeals and screams young girls seem to make (my granddaughter included) when they’re in a group. They get louder as they compete to be heard and really hurt my ears

I also cannot stand the sound of people chewing food and my DD is the same. When we had our extension built I made sure there was a spare wall in the kitchen for a TV. Hence DH and I have some rubbish on the TV during meal times and I don't have to get myself all wound up.

I hate the sound of smoke/fire/car/burglar alarms, etc. I know that they have to be 'alarming' for a reason but they make me cover my ears in horror.

EllanVannin I have breathing problems and I remember as a young child (8-10 years) my Dad moaning at me and saying 'why can't you breathe quietly , you sound like an old cart horse'. I used to sit there trying so hard not to breathe heavily, in the end I would have to leave the room and go sit on my own so I didn't annoy him. I am still a mouth breather and now any movement at all renders me fighting for breath, Good job I live alone I guess.

I can't stand dogs that bark constantly. Drives me mad.
Since moving to the countryside 12 years ago I now find that when I drive into town I hate the traffic noise. I do love peace and quiet.

Video game music and sound effects, any visiting grandkids attached to screens have to use quality earphones. Earphones that let the sounds escape sound like mice dancing on a bisxcuit tin. uugh...

Constant sniffers drive me up the wall. For some weird reason spooning dry custard out of the container and walking through deep snow makes my flesh crawl.

I get that. Those two sounds are very similar. They don’t bother me though.
Just about all the other sounds mentioned do bother me.

I totally get the custard thing! It’s soooo squeaky!!!
I can’t stand tin lids scraping against each other (ie, sardine tins when you have to flatten the lid! Yikes, I’m gritting my teeth so hard as I write this!! )
Also hate sniffers, throat clearing, loud eaters ...etc!
Good job I live on my own ... ?

Whistling - it makes me feel ill and I could quite easily hit the person who is doing it.
