Hi, new here - anyone had cataract surgery?

Yes i' e had both eyes done and its a doddle

Your eyes are numbed so you seriously feel nothing apart from a bit of tugging, after they put a series of anaesthetic drops in, and you see nothing apart from a light you're told to focus on.
You do not see someone approaching with a knife in their hand, all you are aware of is darkness, water flowing down your eye and a bit of tugging.
I felt very tired and went to bed early, next morning my eye felt a bit sore, but frequent eye drops took care of that.
I can't see why you'd feel any pain at all (and I'm a complete coward) but if you do - say so.

I had both mine done a few years ago (not at the same time). No problem at all..

I had both of mine done a few years ago. They blurred after a while and I had to have laser treatment (painless) to clear some debris left after the operations.

Your thread was very helpful as my optician has told me I have cataracts and dread having the op. How poor does sight have to be to need the op as was surprised when told I had cataracts.

Everyone I know who has had the op said it was a huge success.

What I dread is having to sleep on my back for some time I never normally sleep this way . I sleep in a single bed so how will I stop myself turning on my side ?

I don't recall being told to sleep on my back, but I'm a back-sleeper anyway so it wouldn't have been a problem. (I rather think sleeping on your back is only needed for detached retina surgery, but am not sure of this).
The improvement in sight, especially colours and distance vision, is amazing. Well worth it.

Cataracts can take years to grow. I had a referral after years of being told I had cataracts, but when I went to the hospital I was told that at this stage the risks ( everything has risks) were greater than the benefit so have them reassessed next year. Bear in mind the top risk was Covid to put it into perspective.

My DH had his done a few weeks ago, he's a real nervous person and the though of it got him quite worried beforehand, but he returned home from the hospital smiling and amazed how easy and pain free the procedure had been. He would return again for the other Eye should be ever require it, without fear.

Welcome GrammaGill. I had a cataract op to my right eye in January. I'm waiting on an appointment to have the other eye done. You don't feel it being done. The hospital I had it done put a blue cover over your face. I felt I was looking up at the sky. There is a hint of oxygen gently blowing. They played quiet music in the background too. There was a light near to the eye that was being operated on. You just feel a slight movement near the eye. Once it's over they put a transparent shield with holes in it over your eye with sticky tape. You wear this in bed too. So it helps to keep your eye safe. Nothing to worry about. It makes a huge difference. You can see much clearer and colours are brighter. I can see for miles just like when I was much younger! I'm surprised at just how bad my eyesight had got. I'm sure you'll be fine. Positive thoughts on the way.
