Anyway to return to the thread point. I’ve sworn never to say “in my day.....”! However tempted.

If I asked my mother whether I looked ok (going to a do) she’d say “who do you thinks going to be looking at you ?”
If I made an effort with make up (never lots). She’d say I looked a bit “painted doll”.

I remember the occasion my mother complimented me on my hair. I was 62! It was a memorable day.

.......you have to quell the urge to say (to a much younger sister), 'What on earth have done with your hair?'

I was watching a clip about Northern Soul at Wigan Casino with my 13 year old granddaughter and told her I use to go regularly. She looked at me in amazement and said ‘You used to dance like that?’ -Without thinking I said ‘I wasn’t born middle aged’. Then it came to me that my mum had said the same to me when I had the same reaction to her tales of Jitterbugging in her youth.

...you say, as a child leaves the house "Have you taken everything?"

My daughter said to her boys "Excuse me! This is not a bouncy castle, it's my sofa!"

She said that's exactly what I used to say to her.

I loved my mother dearly, but I am so unlike her, I would really start worrying, if I found myself doing or saying, other than within quotation marks, anything she did or said

I saw these in a show and one read:
"Sometimes when I open my mouth, my mother pops out"

My GP explained that a sore on my finger that wouldn't heal was impetigo and I blurted out, 'but that's what dirty people get'. I had to apologise that it had been my mother speaking. GP was highly amused and explained that it was a staph aureus infection and anyone could get it.

I’ve just been talking to my brother online and we were remembering my mum always saying how kind and helpful the shopping delivery folks were. We were saying just that the other day now that due to Covid we also have online shopping - the deliveries ladies and men are always so friendly and helpful!!!! We both smile whenever we say it!

My mum is 92, she’s a staunch feminist and has always been very outspoken. One thing she says is ‘he’s more mouth than trousers’ - found myself saying that the other day without even understanding what it means!

Same here grannypiper . Fortunately my granddaughter is not interested in children otherwise it would be four generations.

I often open my mouth and my Mother comes out, problem is my Daughter says the exactly the same thing !

Used to drive my bickering brother and I insane - I did a double take when I heard my mums words escape my mouth to my own two children!!

Vests were very important to Mums and now Grans understand their importance too!

I was determined not to sound like my mam then one day I heard myself say the immortal old lady phrases, "She'll catch her death going out in those skimpy clothes", "What she needs is a nice coat over that dress" and worst of all "I just don't understand young people these days"

"Are you wearing a vest"?

And you keep coming out with sayings like "Every cloud has a silver lining", "A fool and his money are soon parted", "Save the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves", "One man's meat is another man's poison" etc etc etc

I am totally determined not to sound like my mother but sometimes I do. I’m sorry to say this but she was not a very nice lady. There I’ve said it.

When I look in the mirror - when I was younger I looked like my very glamorous aunt.

And, when people say ' dont you look like your mum.....though she was prettier!'

Though my brothers say it to torment me now!!

When I referred to a stray hair on my chin as a whisker...(only to myself of course!)

When I first uttered the words “Life’s not fair, get used to it!’ to a whining daughter.....

I would know I had turned into my mum if I said "close that door you weren't born in a barn" or "turn the light off we are not plugged into the national grid".
