I thought I was very sophisticated when I was allowed to drink Port and lemon. Now it’s gin and tonic, or very occasionally a gin liqueur with Prosecco. Hot drink it has to be tea.

And yes, my real life friends and I have talked about our discussions being about the same subjects, but something new is always found to add interest. I think the same goes for GransNet, but judging by all the baking, present buying and wrapping going on, perhaps people are busy?

I’ve just had Christmas cake with some Wensleydale and cranberries. I’m wishing now that I’d had a schooner of sherry with it. Yes, I still have a couple of the glasses, though they’re smaller than I remember. Perhaps I used to go for the double schooners.

I was really ill after a night out on rum and blackcurrant - disgusting.

My family Whstsapp group is much quieter than usual as we have nothing much happening in our lives at the moment. It's the same on GN I think, how many dog walks and baking sessions can we discuss.

As long as it is red coloured jelly. Strawberry or raspberry.

Yes SueDonim, always jelly when I do it for the children but not when I do the Sherry soaked version for adults.

I agree Ellianne! To me, trifle without jelly is simply cake with custard, a standard school pudding.

I have been known to use orange jelly with tinned mandarin oranges in the children’s summer trifle but always red jelly at Christmas ?

Having hated jelly in a trifle, years ago, one Christmas, I made a trifle with pears at the bottom, big layer of sliced double chocolate muffins soaked in a massive glug of rum, custard (sometimes chocolate custard) and cream. It became a favourite. Small one this Christmas for the two of us.

No one ever moaned about the lack of jelly. Children had a non-alcoholic version.

For some reason we have two jellies in our trifle. One is mixed with carnation milk and whipped into a mousse. Anyone else ever heard of this?

I dont like trifles...but I do like to dip my toast..with marmalade on it..into my tea ?

I've never had it like that, but my mum mentioned that very thing only two days ago.

Apparently, that's how my grandma used to make her trifle.
In fact, she also used the post war welfare orange juice to flavour one of the two jellies - my mum says it was lovely!
