I get sick and tired of the 'we will all be ok if we buy British' or even worse 'we managed in the war'. I do buy British, local when I can, but try as I might, I can't get locally grown oranges for example. Many people have quoted the figures regarding self sufficiency, and it seems many just don't or won't take notice. I was not a housewife during the war, and I don't think many on here were either, although they have this strange romantic view of what were terrible and hard times. We were not self sufficient in the war, despite rationing, despite very different expectations and to keep repeating the same old nonsense does not make it true. Please don't witter on about nobody needing strawberries at Christmas because I agree, but I would like to eat more than turnip and root veg for six months of the year, besides which, what I eat, where it comes from, what I pay for it, is my business, my choice, and I deeply resent a minority of the British electorate having taken that choice away from me.
