Well I either like or feel neutral about most of the songs mentioned. The only ones I agree with are Fairy tale on New York and hallelujah.
I dislike very maudlin sentimental songs especially sung in a poppy way with an American accent but can’t think of any examples. Oh yes, the song on the current John Lewis ad.

I'm with joannap on We'll meet again. Also can't stand Hallelujah - too many awful screechy, warbly versions trying to sound soulful.

Have I the Right by The Honeycombs. It was a hit record at a time when my mum and dad took me on holiday. It was the first holiday we’d had for a long time as we were really poor and I got it in my head that I must be seriously ill with something and they’d taken me on what would be m last ever holiday. Yes, even at the age of 20 I was a hypochondriac. It was only a caravan in Evesham: not even the seaside. The song totally depresses me!

Hey Mr Tambourine Man played endlessly by a boyfriend one summer, he was very nice but as boring as the song.

I'm enjoying this thread.

I love Mr. Tambourine Man - when my son was in his teens, he got a picture of a surfer, and wrote out the words 'to dance beneath a diamond sky......' on top of it, as a gift to me, which I treasure.

And Seasons in the Sun is a really interesting song - badly translated from the original which I love.

And this is why I'm loving this thread!

A musician said to me that he thinks that the divide is between those who love the words and those who love the music. Not sure if he's right, but I do know people who tell me they like a song, but if I say that I don't like the words they say 'oh, I never listen to them'. That's why I have mixed feelings about Mack the Knife - great tune, very evocative - about a serial (or contract) killer! Fine in context, but otherwise ?!

He also wrote Layla for her when she was married to George Harrison.

FannyCornforth - I shouldn't perhaps have called an individual 'daft', but what the singer seems to be saying is that whatever he wants to do, this woman enables him to do it, unquestioningly (whilst looking beautiful).
You ask if I can imagine having a song like that written for me - no I can't imagine it at all!
By 'wow' do you mean that you would have liked to be the subject of the song?
Why I like this thread so much is how we all read different things into these songs!

Some songs disliked by others are my favourites - Dance the Night Away by the Mavericks always gets me on the dance floor; Nilsson's Without You is a classic as is Hey Jude and Imagine!
Absolutely detest Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys - she absolutely screams some of the Lyrics - I always rush to turn it off the radio, it just sets my teeth on edge. Don't like Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again (sorry!) the tune is just so miserable, though the words aren't. Don't like anything by Abba or The Carpenters either. Also detest with a passion any Rap songs - lyrics are meant to be sung!

And what's that awful one that goes... "Driving home for Christmas"? Yuck.

Trying hard to recall a song I dislike. My Way, Lady in Red, Imagine.

Oh LadyBella when my daughter lived a long way from us I used to love "Driving Home for Christmas" because it reminded me that she would indeed be "Driving Home for Christmas"
Happily she is just a little way from us now........as is my son who also lived a long way from us back then.
