In California, Washington State, and (I think) most of the United States we have living rooms and family rooms (where we actually "live"--watch television, read, etc. When I was a child growing up in Michigan state, we called it the front room and didn't have an "extra" room to socialize. We have a master bedroom. It's called it primarily because it's larger than the others and has its own bathroom. We don't live in a mansion or estate.
