That's Nice or is it Marvellous, Brilliant, Kind, Comforting, Pretty ....?

There's nothing wrong whatsoever with using the word 'nice'.

I imagine that many teachers just wanted to encourage children not to rely upon that word alone, and expand their vocabulary.
Unfortunately, as with so many of these 'rules' that were drummed into most of us as children, they are taken too literally and applied too rigidly.

I'm far too 'nice' myself to worry about the use of this inoffensive word - have a nice day!

And what about “got” ? Another banned word in my youf.?
Taught use of thesaurus from Year 2 onwards. We have a rich language which is there to be used. Children are encouraged to use it where possible and most enjoy doing so. Old fogey rant over?

I too was taught to try to avoid the use of nice.

I think every day I am living in a different world than everyone else! I have never heard before that the word "nice" is disapproved of. I am sure I use it far too much!

Yes I was taught that there were better adjectives to use. I don't mind if its used once in a sentence but not more than that.

I also use the nice word whilst being sarcastic.

I remember reading a while back that the word marvellous is used much less frequently now.

It would be a shame if it disappeared wouldn’t it?

Our English teacher disapproved of "nice" and "lots of", both of which I try and avoid. But I don't really cringe any more when others use it.

One of our close friends definition of nice is :-

N neurotic
I insecure
Cchaotic
Eemotional

I taught that 'nice' was lazy. Sometimes I'm lazy but other times I find a better word.
