Love all the older names that are becoming very popular and have been for a while, especially Elsie Dorothy Nerys Maud, Connie. My friend called her baby Rosalyn haven’t heard that one for several years

I think one of the worst girl's names is Mona.

Camelotclub Fri 10-Jan-20 19:36:49

My maternal grandparents were Elsie and Arthur. Now right back in vogue!

Paternal GP's were Winifred and Travis. Wonder if they'll come in again.

gilld69 apparently Maisie is a diminutive of Margaret

It's a nice name, it suits little girls, so has become increasingly popular (very popular in our area).

David Cameron’s daughter is called Nancy.

I know an Agatha. Poor child, I think this is the ugliest name ever.

Edith for me.

Callistemon Fri 10-Jan-20 16:40:57

My DGS was yellow (jaundiced)
I suppose if he'd been girl they could have called him Saffron Bobdoesit

Lilly Pillies are lovely when in flower and when they have berries.

Bobdoesit Fri 10-Jan-20 16:36:14

I like that idea Callistemon but my DIL said they chose it because when first born her skin was pure white. She is seven now and a very healthy colour. smile

When we lived in our old house, our neighbors had a baby girl they named Amanda Elizabeth....to this day, I still think that was a most beautiful name.

Granmaz Fri 10-Jan-20 16:35:58

In the fifties, my name, Marilyn was popular (for obvious reasons) can’t imagine anyone calling their daughter that now!!

Callistemon Fri 10-Jan-20 16:31:14

I know an eight year old called Nancy!

Xxjanexx Fri 10-Jan-20 16:27:30

My mums name was Nancy...and I can say I’ve never heard anyone else called by that name.

Callistemon Fri 10-Jan-20 16:16:03

Cordelia is a lovely name

Reggie! They obviously don't know much about recent history

LadyJus Fri 10-Jan-20 15:25:56

I've never met anyone, ever, with the middle name I was bestowed with - Cordelia.

American here - we have the worst habit of making up names or just using awful spellings. American seems to think you can throw an apostrophe or a Y into anything and makes it cooler. My oldest went to school with a boy named Josh. However, it was spelled Xjosh. The mom would say "Oh, the Y is silent". confused

Years ago I was visiting the church in the Bronte village of Howarth, and heard a woman call to her two wandering children, "Catherine, Heathcliff, come here!"

My grand-daughter and her litt1e son have 12 and 20 letters in their attractive given names. They reduce them to 2 and 3, saves time and effort when writing, e-mailing, I suppose.

I really don't like the old fashioned names that are making such a comeback. Dorothy, Edith, Ivy - names of my grandparents' generation. One of my grandfathers was called Dennis Bernard. Hard to imagine some poor little boy being inflicted with those names.

My Aunt who died last year aged 86 was known as Dot (Dorothy) but that was her middle name. She was given the first name of Ernestina, no wonder she changed it to her middle name!

One of my granddaughters is Edith a real old name which really suits her now she is 11.

I was talking to a Mum whose DD was Elsie. My Gran's name I told her, no it is Elise she said. Wrong spelling for 5 years and no one had told her at the time ? Also seen Ellauise instead of Eloise. Spelling is very important

Madmaggie Fri 10-Jan-20 13:55:38

There was an Ida in our family & she was lovely so I love the name. We now have an Amy and a Violet.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 10-Jan-20 13:40:30

Who would want to be subjected to the christian name of River as one well known celeb has bestowed upon one of his children.

MerylStreep Fri 10-Jan-20 13:29:00

My daughters friends know that they will get the withering look if they dare to shorten her name: it's Kathryn.

Thank god my father didn't get his wish when I was born: he wanted Ethel☹️

Some years back I was helping a friend with some form filling. I've always known her as, Sue, but she's really a Deirdre. I found it very amusing, she didn't ?
