... and planning to be financially independent.

How many of us after being given an engagement ring, lovingly designed and commissioned by our fiancé and costing the earth, have it redesigned within a year?

I designed my own ring, just so I’d never have to worry about that

lucywinter Sat 11-Jan-20 11:04:24

hollysteers Earlier in this thread, someone compared Harry to George V!

Err no. I said he looks a bit like him. hmm

Summerlove Sat 11-Jan-20 10:59:02

What about the Queen's mental health? It must be tearing her in bits!

Then that’s for her to sort.

Her family doesn’t exist to soothe her mental spirits. Just like any of us. Family are not mood stabilizers

Callistemon Sat 11-Jan-20 10:51:11

Yes, I agree MawB, I think that William enjoys spending time with his in-laws and probably feels able to relax there.

Re the engagement ring, I would probably keep smiling and keep wearing it but would prefer to have chosen my own!

MawB Sat 11-Jan-20 10:42:38

A question, I don’t expect answers so more an observation.

I wondered about that too Annsixty.

I would be hurt by a similar action, it certainly seemed insensitive at the time.
I think what is niggling me (and no doubt others) is the crass way this whole thing has been handled. If it has been planned for some time then there was time to plan it better so as to maintain goodwill all round and respect the Queen’s feelings.
But as somebody in the Telegraph, I think, said today “Meghan just wasn’t into Britain” So was this the plan from the outset?
Something else which occurs to me is the warm and stable family background Kate provided for William. From reports before the wedding he enjoyed spending time with the Middletons , presumably feeling at ease as part of a relaxed family life he had been denied.
How ironic then when Harry made that comment about Meghan becoming part of a family she had never had - clearly not a family she wanted either.

He has chucked his job but not all that comes with the job

Callistemon Sat 11-Jan-20 10:37:33

I'm using all my leftovers, GrannySquare so no wrappers left.
I decided to knit from point to point instead.

ExD1938 Sat 11-Jan-20 10:35:49

Did she do that? How insensitive.

Harry is obviously besotted so he may not have minded so much, and long may it last.
Let them go without our financial help, but don't expect the extended family to abandon them.
Many people must know the heartbreak of a beloved grandchild emigrating, some never see their offspring again whilst those those who can afford it make visits, send birthday and Christmas gifts, and welcome them home for holidays.
What's so different? He's chucked in his job (working for us) and should lose his wage - its up to him to find another one in his chosen country.

SirChenjin Sat 11-Jan-20 10:34:20

If you had the money to spare - wouldn't you do this? They aren't going to chuck him out and forget him. Would you?

Both M and H are independently wealthy - they don’t need help from Granny or Daddy who I’m sure are both very mindful of the outcry this has caused and potential it has to turn yet more of the population away from the RF. If the RF is to survive beyond the lifetime of the Queen they need to consider what is best for the longevity of the institution and not what’s best for H and M’s global brand.

GrannySquare Sat 11-Jan-20 10:34:14

@callistemon surely you have your tension square...?
12cm square stitch requirement should be on the yarn wrapper.
What size needle you using ?

I have a preemie blanket to finish before I cast on for the joeys et al.

Anniebach Sat 11-Jan-20 10:32:16

It would ?

Ellianne Sat 11-Jan-20 10:30:06

That question would make a good thread!

Anniebach Sat 11-Jan-20 10:27:49

Is an engagement ring a gift ?

Callistemon Sat 11-Jan-20 10:23:43

hmm
I'm not sure. I may have wanted some input into the design. To be fair, if designed and chosen by a man it may not be quite what I had in mind.

It always surprises me to see films etc where a man proposes and produces a ring and I always think that I would want to choose my own.

To be fair Charles can’t jump on a bus. Does he keep the cars
at Clarence House or does he have one in Scotland, one in Wales, one at Highgrove , ?

annsixty Sat 11-Jan-20 10:13:03

All seems to have been planned well in advance.
So underhand and so sad .

Ellianne Sat 11-Jan-20 10:11:02

The dogs were moved halfway across the world last November? Well, that says it all.

Callistemon Sat 11-Jan-20 10:09:34

Who has helped them to do this? They surely have not set this up all by themselves?
Experienced royal aides have left and I believe an American woman was appointed as PR woman.

ExD1938 Sat 11-Jan-20 10:09:22

Harry's Dad and his Gran are NOT going to abandon their son/grandson - would you do this to yours?
After the initial 'hurt' which they admitted to feeling, the Queen and P Charles will want to help this family out and I imagine will continue to subsidise their lifestyie wherever they go.
If you had the money to spare - wouldn't you do this? They aren't going to chuck him out and forget him. Would you?

Eloethan Sat 11-Jan-20 10:07:21

Charles also goes on about the environment and how we are damaging it:

Telegraph 2009

"*Prince Charles urges people to abandon car in favour of walking and public transport*

"The Prince of Wales is urging people to give up their cars in favour of walking and public transport to try to reduce carbon emissions.

"The Prince, who has two Jaguars, two Audis, a Range Rover and still drives an Aston Martin given to him by the Queen on his 21st birthday, said developers had a duty to put public transport and the pedestrian at the heart of their housing schemes."

He doesn't get much flak for it though. Neither do many of the hypocritical activities the royal family takes part in.

Anniebach Sat 11-Jan-20 10:06:15

Every generation of the Windsors have had a ‘wild child’,

sf101 Sat 11-Jan-20 10:03:38

They won't make money from selling their old tat if no one buys it, I would like them to disappear and never have to hear anything about them again.
But leave the titles and tax payers money in Britain.

Manmar2 Sat 11-Jan-20 10:02:49

I agree maddyone. The trouble is he appears totally besotted. That may wear off further down the line.

maddyone Sat 11-Jan-20 09:58:01

It does look as though Meghan has no intention of returning to the UK. The baby and the dogs were left in Canada. She’s left Harry to sort out the mess. I suspect that she’s been planning this for some time. Their website SussexRoyal was registered last March. Poor Harry, he’s been manipulated. He’s lost everything, his family, his country, and his position. She’s gained everything, money, fame, control.
