Rover 2000 TC. It was my dad’s new car and he taught me. Like others said, if you can drive and park a big car, you can do it in anything.

A boyfriend’s split-screen Morris Minor.

Morris Minor - the early kind with the split front windscreen. Remember those 'semaphore' indicators and the hand signals we had to learn?

VW bug

My first car was a Morris 1000 convertible and it cost me £45! I was 17.

I'd only passed my test 3 weeks before I had an accident and the car was badly damaged. Luckily my brother was a mechanic and repaired and replaced most of the front. It had to be resprayed and I chose bright yellow! I loved it

Didn't have any lessons from a driving school, my dad taught me in his Morris Oxford estate car. Looking back it was far better to learn in a big car rather than a smaller car as it means I can drive (and park) any car.
The first car I owned was a Mini Clubman. My dad said that if I saved the money he would look out for a nice car for me and then once I had saved the money he bought it for me and told me to hang on to my savings.

I never did learn to drive, but hubby decided to learn 12 years after we got married, and learnt in the car he bought off his brother, a red Hillman Minx estate, automatic. The registration was FND 570 D. That`s what he passed his test in, which limited us to automatics, but it didn`t bother him, he liked them. It went to the great scrapyard in the sky in 1978.

Simca Aronde at 15 ... then TR4 and 2CV to prepare for test at 18 - what a mix ahahaha

An Hillman Imp, l was only 5 years old and drove on a disused Airfield whilst sitting on my Dad’s Knee! By the time l was 10, l could Drive my Dad’s Wolsey 16/60 Automatic on Private land all by myself, however, l had to wait until l was 17 before l could take my test to drive solo in a Mini, the darn thing broke down during my test, leaving me stranded, whist the examiner walked back to the test centre. I finally took my test in a Morris Marina, borrowed from a Friend, and passed.

I learned to drive primarily in my Dads Morris Oxford. A brute of a car but it felt safe. The few lessons with my instructor was in a ‘Harry Potter’ blue Ford Anglia. My first car was an older style Anglia soon followed by black Austin A30 with flip out indicators which I loved.

Xxjanexx Wed 01-Jan-20 21:22:03

Driving instructor was a allegro
2nd one was a mini metro
My then boyfriend had a Toyota celica ooo I felt the bees knees driving it?

Callistemon Wed 01-Jan-20 21:17:35

A blue Hillman Imp belonging to the driving school.
My family didn't have a car and I could only just scrape enough together for lessons but I was determined to learn.
I needed to pass first time as I couldn't afford any more lessons.

grumppa Wed 01-Jan-20 20:53:15

Austin A40 was my instructor's car, along with mother's Austin Cambridge.

InaMarJoy Wed 01-Jan-20 20:24:55

Left hand drive Renault 5 in Hampshire. Then went back to Germany with a right hand drive Mazda. Like a challenge

I can't remember what it was. But it was black, had running boards, cost £10, and my Dad bought it from a farmer who kept chickens in it. It frightened me to death. ButI did pass my test and then had a Triumph Herald. Can't drive now as my eyesight is rubbish

Urmstongran Wed 01-Jan-20 19:31:12

A BSM mini in 1972. Then married and our first car was a Hillman Avenger. I can still remember the number plate!

Baggs Wed 01-Jan-20 19:30:50

Ford Escort that sometimes needed one to double declutch.

M0nica Wed 01-Jan-20 19:21:58

SAAB 96 with a two stroke engine and a free wheel facility, which enabled me to disconnect the engine and just roll down hills (no longer legal)

My first car was the same model, but a different colour.

threexnanny Wed 01-Jan-20 19:16:00

BSM's Ford Cortina. My first car of my own was meant to be a Morris Minor, but I saw and fell in love with a mini instead! Great for city driving but later, when I bought another, we were in semi rural area and I did not find it as practical

FlexibleFriend Wed 01-Jan-20 19:06:37

A mini cooper s that had been fully renovated by my then boyfriend.

Chewbacca Wed 01-Jan-20 19:04:59
